I'm having a problem with Nero and CD writing speeds. I've built hundreds of pc's all usually having a bundled nero 6 installed on them without problems, then I build one for my son and his ladyfriend and I get a problem and it's hacking me off 'cause I can't find the problem. Normally it's possible to choose the writing speed from a drop down listing but in this case only two options are shown, maximum and x52 (which is the maximum). The drive an LG GCE-8527 has the latest firmware. Nero is 6.6.0.18 and OS is XP Pro SP2. I'm as sure as I can be that its not the drive as I've just added a x16 BTC DVD writer and it only shows maximum and x16. He is able to copy but only at the maximum which means he has to be choosy when buying discs. Is anyone aware of what might be causing this and how I might go about sorting it. Thanks.
Hello Toby55. Is there a blank disk in the drive when you're seeing these speeds listed? Nero will only show all the available speeds for burning when a blank disk is in the drive since the speeds depend on the write strategies contained in the firmware. Startup DVD Decrypter. If you don't have it it can be downloaded here: http://filehippo.com/download_dvd_decrypter/ Under the Mode menu set the mode to ISO Write. Place one of the blank DVDs into the burner and make sure it is selected as the output device. Post the info in the right side column back to this thread. The top line of that column will be the name of the burner.
Hi Laddyboy - Thanks for your reply. No there is no disc in the drive. It may be sometime before I get to my sons place again to get the info you suggested I post. I'm not sure why you say Nero will only show all the available speeds for burning when a blank disk is in the drive. I have no discs in my drives at the moment yet if I open nero express and choose copy entire disc and open up the writing speed drop down box I see a list from x52 down to x4 but on my sons he only sees x52. His DVD writer is a BTC 2016IM and he only sees x16 on that. Anyone else on here have a LG GCE-8527 ?
Nero cannot know all the available burning speeds without the specific media in the burner. The firmware contains all the available write strategies for a specific media. The firmware must ID the specific media before it can lookup the strategies. If you place a 2X rated disk in the burner, Nero's not going to provide a burning speed of 16X to choose. Nero provides the speeds of 1X, 2X, 2.4X and Maximum in DVD mode for my version without a disk in the burner. With a 16X rated disk in the burner it goes 4X, 6X, 8X, 16X, Maximum. If you're getting 24X and 52X speeds, then Nero would seem to be in CD mode. It is of course possible that Nero doesn't like that particular burner. I don't care for Nero Express very much. It can be tempermental. Does Nero Burning ROM show the same speeds? The question is what speeds are displayed when a disk is in the burner and in DVD mode? Uninstalling Nero with the Nero Clean Tool and then doing a fresh install may solve some problems if they persist. Also make sure Nero InCD is not installed and no Roxio software is installed either.
Thanks again for replying. Yes, nero burning rom is the same. There is no listing in the drop down box for DVD or CD mode. With all the machines i've ever built there's been a listing to choose from in CD or DVD mode without a disc in the drive. What will happen for instance is that when nero starts to burn it will say can't burn at x52 for cd or x16 for dvd for the current disk and adjust the speed accordingly, but it's not possible on my sons pc to select a suitable speed before the burning phase. I'd already tried using the clean tool and re-installing but it made no difference.
There definitely should be both "DVD" and "CD" appearing in the dropdown menu. I honestly don't know whether this is a problem with Nero not recognizing your burner or a problem with the burner. Is your burner set as the master on the secondary IDE channel? Since you've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling Nero, let's try uninstalling the burner via Device Manager. Let's eliminate Nero for the moment by uninstalling it. Run the Clean tool and uninstall Nero and do not reinstall yet. To uninstall a burner. Right click on My Computer and choose Properties. Select Hardware tab. Click the Device Manager button. Click the "+" beside DVD/CD-ROM drives to expand. Right click on the burner/device name and select Uninstall. Let's also reset DMA: In Device Manager: Click the "+" beside IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Right click on the channel you want to uninstall and select Uninstall. Restart the system. Now fire up DVD Decrypter, load a blank disk in the drive, and post the contents of the right hand column that begins with the burner name. Examine the write speeds displayed by DVD Decrypter. Do they seem correct.? If so, then try backing up a DVD using DVD Decrypter/DVDFab Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and then burn with DVD Decrypter. See if this works. If so, try reinstalling Nero if you really need it. Also if I don't respond to further posts it's because I'll be on a fishing trip until Wednesday evening next. Either someone else will be able to pick this up or I will respond as soon as I return.
