Some while ago, NeroDigital MP4 files that I created using Nero Recode used to display the filetype in Windows Explorer windows with a special Nero Digital Icon and pointing at the file would give you details of the encoding profile and video size. Very useful. Only now I notice today that this is no longer displaying - the MP4 filetype icon is for Quicktime player instead. If I remove MP4 from the file associations in Quicktime, then MP4 files are no longer associated with anything. Have Nero removed their useful windows shell extension for MP4 files? If not, how would I get it back in place. I don't know whether this is releveant but I don't have Nero Showtime installed. Any ideas? Nigel
It looks like you may have allowed Quicktime to take the association of the file for itself. Try right clicking on an .mp4 file and see if there is an "Open With" option. If so, use it to change it back to Nero. If you don't have that, go to Folder Options in the control panel, or open a folder and look for an options menu and change it there. I'm running Vista right now so I can't check how XP works.
Well I tested a theory that the shell extension I was missing is now only installed with ShowTime, and this indeed seems to be the answer. It used to be installed with Recode but has now been linked to ShowTime instead, which is a pity because I don't want another media player cluttering up my machine. Thanks Nigel
