I have been trying to like NeroVision since version 2. It came with Nero 6 and it was in many ways ahead of the pack at it's price point. However, since it always reencoded sources and had a lousey MPEG encoder, it was useless to me. Somewhere along the way (in version 3 I think) they added smart encoding. It worked well for me. However at some point, version 3 started insisting on reencoding compliant MPEG2 video streams. Having given up on it for a while I decided to buy Nero 7 at Best Buy with a $50 rebate. (I figured it's worth a shot for $20) Well here I am wondering yet again at how a product that has so much promise can drop the ball so badly. The smart encoding bug is still there. I can feed it compliant MPEG2 streams that TMPGEnc DVD Author is fine with but Nero insists on reencoding the video. Has anyone else run into this and is there a solution? I submitted a support request through their site but their support has been less than helpful in the past and I am not hopeful.
I think I found the solution. It hit me that Nero seems to do quite a bit of analysis on the source files and it turns out that it must pick up problems in the MPEG that TMPGEnc DVD Author didn't. I used VideoRedo's QuickStream fix to rewrite the MPG and now Nero is OK with it.
