    Hi,

I am having problems with my Netgear wireless-G modem router (DG834G)regarding its download speed of medium to large files. The wireless router is connected directly to my pc with WPA-PSK security enabled. There is a laptop, a pc and two ps3's running from the wireless connection. My router is a Netgear Wireless-G.

I use BitSpirit as my torrent download application and I have been downloading video files around 700mb. However it is going really slow and most times not even starting the download at all, even when there are thousands of people seeding the file. I have tired this while all other devices are using the network and with them all turned off! It is just so slow. Previously, before I got wireless I had an ADSL modem and had no problems, the download speed was really fast.

Also I have noticed when I download files from the internet - eg. Right Click - Save file as… and not use torrents the download completes really fast!

How can I speed up my downloads in Bitspirit (torrents) and generally large files? Is there a setting(s) I need to change, I checked the pnp setting and that is enabled. I just want to be able to download large files and a good / fast speed like I use to and this wireless just isnt allowing it! Please help, what can I do or change? Its soooo slow!!!

    Thanks
    Paul

Paul, sounds like you need to open up a port for your torrent client on your wireless router. also make sure you have modified your outbound tcp settings if your on windows xp from the default of 10 to about 100 to 500. don't forget that the default before sp2 was unlimited so choose a value that you think you will need. i personally haved set mine to 100. to open a port you need to set your computer that is using the torrent client a static ip address and then find out what port the client is using. open this port in the router and set it to the address you gave your computer. this should speed up your downloads.

for more information check out http://www.portforward.com/ and to patch your tcp check out http://www.lvllord.de/

Im having the exzact same problem, your not alone my friend. I wireless but its only for one computer. Im having problems Downloading files, playing online games and generally slow internet connection. around the evening about tea time. my ping rate soars to about 200 which is horrible.

but my real question is,is it risky to make a static ip. Im extremely scared of following the guide on Portforward.com and fudging up my connection for good. Anyone had sucess? Any feedback much appreciated thank you

opening a port and setting a static ip address is completely reversible and you can always just perform a reset on the modem or router to return to default settings. its worth a try. if you were getting good speeds before and now have a router and are getting slow speed it would definitely be your router.

the static ip is for your local notwork and has nothing to do with the dynmamic ip address from your isp.

As Jalathole said, Using an static Ip in fact is safe and reversible. Using the Port Forward guide is safe, and even if you misconfigured something that may have stop your connection, the changes are always reversible.

Now make sure you configure various ports for several applications that may use them (this may include P2P programs, games and other applications that use th internet), and use and static Ip, because if you dont your computers Ip may change and the ports may be forwarded to another Ip.

My only recommendation is to dont touch any value or setting that you dont know or are not sure about, just follow the guide or search for information before configuring any unknown parameter for you, in your router.

if your browsing is slow you may want to also look into browser pipelining. just google it.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your replies...

I have a few questions before im gonna try the static ip

Firstly would these changes to the static ip need to be done on all machines and devices connecting to the router as well as the router and my computer?

Would this need to be done for every application such as other internet appz, eg p2p etc?

I changed my torrent application to uTorrent and not Bitspirit, and there is an option where you can check if the port is open. uTorrent now downloads my torrents...However, i am on an 8mb connection, so my router tells me, after speed tests it shows only 4-5mb max. My downloads go at 150kbps max, so i dont understand why they are not going to the full 8mb, or even the speed at what the tests come back at.

So my downloads now start and download, but its still slow and not the specified 8mb or the 4-5mb from the speed tests. What could this be???

    Cheers

ok well it looks like everything is fine. you aren't going to get the download speed that a speed test tells you on a torrent. It all depends how many seeds the torrent has etc.

and yes every computer you want to open a port with has to have its own static ip.

Indeed you to do this on every computer or device connected to the network, but you will get better download speed with programs that need open ports.

Just so you know Bitorrent does not always download at your maximum connection speed, although deepending on the seeders available on each torrent you may get a good download speed. Although it also depends on the type of connection you use, for example cable connection may get a littler slower on peak times, but I assure you that once you have your ports open speeds will get better.
