Hi guys, This problem's been bugging me for a few days now and it's getting on my nerves. Wonder if you can help. Just moved into a new house, and bought a Netgear Rangemax DG845PN router. Currently there's 1 PC and 2 Laptop's (all connected via wireless) to it. My problem is that none of the PC's can share files reliably via My Network Places. They're all on XP. All have decent signal strength. They all have file and printer sharing on, and are all apart of the same workgroup. All of the firewall's are configured to allow access (Windows Firewall --> exceptions). IP settings are configured dynamically by router. Can ping the IP addresses of the other computers, but not the computer names. 128-bit WEP is enabled. When i click on "View Workgroup Computers" in my network places, it takes a very long time to display the computers, and most of the time, it only shows my own computer even when others are connected. Some of the time it displays another computer, except when i double click on it, it just gives me an error message (there are folders being shared on the computer). I'd like to be able to sort this out without having to resort to installing the NetBeui service, or IPX. Could this be a problem with the router? Cheers guys, Blighter
"My Network Places" sucks! Try this. click start -> run and type \\(the computer name your trying to connect to)\(the labeled folder) One of my computers is named dell-8250. I have sharing turned on for shared documents, drives D, X & Y. so to connect I ... click start -> run -> \\dell-8250\shareddocuments or \\dell-8250\D to connect to my AMD rig I type in run \\X2-4800\D If access is set up properly in your firewall settings this should work. Having trouble doing that too. Doing "\\192.168.x.x\" works, but not with the computer name. Not sure why. As i said, i can't ping the name either, just the ip address. Anybody know why network places sucks, or how to make it work??
I would try to run the network wizard again. If you can ping the computers you should be able to access whatever you have for shared folders.
Ok, well i've run the "Network Setup Wizard" on every PC. Still, from both pc's, i can't ping the PC name's! ping 192.168.1.2 will work, but ping steelteri-pc will not, for example (yes, the pc name is definitely correct) It's really beginning to bug me now! Connected to a different router (next door really should put some security on...) and couldn't ping any of their PC name's either! Only the ip's! Any ideas? Blighter
Connect to a different router? I can't connect to my network if I'm connected to someone else's router. Now your trying to share files between 2 or more computers within your home network correct? Can you do this for me? Click start -> run -> type cmd -> type ipconfig Do this on all your pcs (1 pc and both laptops). Now verify you can ping all pc's. If so, then post the "Computer Name" of all pcs. Also make sure you enabled sharing on which ever folders/drives you want to share ...
Hey flip, Yeh, by that, i meant that i connected to next door's network, logged into their router to find out all their currently attached devices (computer names and ips), tried to "ping <computername>" but didn't get anything. "Ping <ip-address>" still worked though. Yep, trying to share files - Start -> Run -> \\192.168.1.3 will bring up the shared folders on the remote pc's, but \\Steelteri-PC won't. What i'm having to resort to atm, is going into the hosts file, and adding the line "192.168.1.3 Steelteri-PC", but it's a bit forced. Would like windows to resolve the name without any help, preferably! Ipconfig returns the following : Connection-specific DNS suffix : IP Address : 192.168.1.2 Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 The PC's run as following : Diablo-Robotico (192.168.1.2), Steelteri-PC (192.168.1.3), Silk (192.168.1.4). Hmmm ... well isn't a firewall problem. I can do both on my network. Could be the option you chose when you ran the network wizard. This is the option I chose.
Yep, that's the same one i chose. Seems to me that the computer's are having trouble translating name into ip. Not sure how to fix this though. Might do a complete reformat in a few days, see if that solves the problem.
