I just did a PC build with a P3 (slot 1) and 512 MB RAM with parts laying around my house and overall its a good PC, except for these problems. -It doesn't recognize an 80GB HDD, it sees the model but freezes at POST, my 80GB right now is limited to 30GB and it works -Whenever a USB device is plugged in to the USB 2.0 card, the PC freezes but if I restart with the device in the port, it works. -IE 6 sometimes takes up 100% CPU (Im on the P3 now but its at 3-4% CPU with IE, My Computer and WMP 11 and a CD Playing) -I have trouble playing Halo with a XFX 5500 on this and settings on low. That's all for now, Ill post back If i see more problems.
what speed is the cpu as p3's start at 450mhz upto 1.3ghz but being yours is a slot 1 then probably max at 850mhz? check motherboard site for possible bios update to allow you full access to the 80gig hd.
I have a Pentium 3 at 550 MHz, sometimes I overclock it to 566Mhz, but right now its at 550 MHz. I also have the latest BIOS update. When the 80GB HD is in, it says something like LRG UMDA 5, but when a normal HD is in it says LBA UMDA 5. What does this mean?
As far as I know the controllers on old motherboards like that don't recognise hard drives above 32GB. Consequently this is why there's a space-limiting jumper on some drives to limit them to 32GB. You will have trouble playing Halo on it because the processor speed is below the minimum requirements (Halo requires 733mhz, you have 550)
