are you able to adjust the fan at all coz i used the circuit thats shown and found very little of the pot needs to be turned to get big change in FAN speed...(some may not like this but i can't be chuffed changing the pot now)... and circuit works fine for me. i have the fan at low freq pumping air and even after 2hrs of game time the unit is still "cool" around the vent areas. This has definitely made a MARKED difference in my two phat 60Gb's (aussie models). one of the units is hooked to my PC monitor so when I feel like a session is calling i just power up and am sitting less then 1m away from the PS3 and its got a pleasant hum not irritating like the delta fans of PC kind...

check double check circuit - it has worked for me.
as for YLOD did you use no clean flux during reflow?? also make sure the heatsink sits properly on the RSX & cell dies...may have to double check this...coz sometimes they don't mate properly...

I was going to wait to release this as part of version 5, but I'll just release it as version 4.1; it is a wide-range fan controller circuit; it should work with all models (even slim...although I did not test on a slim yet), and it does not have the "sweet spot" issue. "Slim" units use a slightly lower control voltage to set the fan to full speed (fats use 3.3V, slims user 3.1V). "Slim" units also have 5.5V supply lines while the "fat" units have 5.0V supply lines. Because of this, this design will only deliver about 85% of full speed operation on a "fat" system...but that is more than enough anyway.

I honestly don't know what kind of rectifier diode I used; I pulled it from an old power supply and it had no labeling except the directional mark. Seems like just about any rectifier diode will work...but I'll see if I can get a digikey part number for it. The 1M resistor can be anything over 300K. The potentiometer used is a 100K unit. The values of the other two resistors and the cap should be within 5% of what is marked on the diagram.

Sounds like the issue I had when I tried the 2nd and 3rd version on my slimline...I would say to try the new version because it is designed to get around this problem; but I have not yet tested it with my slim.

I must say, THANK YOU VERY F---ING MUCH KIllerbug and GeToChKn! You to are PS3 heros!
Just done this to a 60g Launch PS3 which I have saved from ebay! I've now had it running for 3 days with a mixture of Gran Turismo 5, Fallout new vegas, Resistance 2 and MGS4. No issues thus far.

All I did was flood my PS3 board with flux, smash a bit of heat on her, slap it back together and do the Fan mod, modified by GeToChKn.
    EBAY PS3 60g YLOD - $150AUD
    PS3 fan mod $10AUD
3 odd hours of scratching up parts and assembling
    WIN!
    Thanks again
    Rob

Playing the latest games on a system pulled from the garbage...priceless.

My YLOD PS3 - done the same - flux'd then heat gun. Run for 1 hour without the case on. Seemed to run fine. Then got pixelation (tell tale sign with this launch 60gb model) and it ran really hot. Want to try a fan mod - most pics have been removed now so I can't do this. Tried another ps3 forum - all we get told is to search forums as the fourms are saturated with fan mods. Well, I can't find them... Does anyone out there make these I can just splice into my fan? Or where I can get the parts from?
(Yep, a girl into console repairs)
