i was under the impression that all games worked however from burning in a less speed the black screen was replaced with the cannot read disk message. still not reading that disk my wii play worked and the setup disk doesnt work anymore " put it in region free mode" and used brick blocker on the iso and burned at 6X speed. Im wondering if it has anything to do with the update or just the way im burning.

just use a GCOS disc to boot first, then put in your setup disc. it'll work fine.

I got brave and manually updated this afternoon to 3.0U. Here are my experiences:

    1. I received NO message as others did about "if you have a modded Wii it may be disabled or whatever" -- I updated (took awhile) rebooted the console and was good to go.

    2. Tested a copied NTSC game (FYI my console is NTSC) and the game worked perfectly.

    3. Tested a copied PAL game (FYI my console is NTSC) and the game worked perfectly.

    4. From what everyone is saying I am still not brave enough to try out my v1.2 WiiKey setup disc (I had already turned on the region override) so for the moment I have no need to run it.

Best of luck to everyone out there and let's raise a cold one to the developers of the WiiKey while we're stickin' it to the Big N! :)

    Cheers!

the warning is only part of the new firmware. 2.2 doesn't have it, that's why you don't get the warning until after the fact. but that said, it doesn't mean that 3.0 is proven totally safe at all. it's just because there were no warnings programmed into the 2.2. as we can already see, setup disks don't work anymore, so something has happened.

    This is the big one.

I updated the wii first to 3.0U, Then I modden it Great.
It reads the 1.2 Update disc and then gives an error

Don't know What a GCOS disc is. As you know you need to configure the
Wiikey first in order for it to work

Can anyone give me a quick solution
    How do I get/make a GCOS disk ..

    etc etc..

you don't need to configure the wiikey first to use it. i've never even burned the wiikey config disc.

When I put in the Wiikey Disc it gives the Nintendo gamecube logo
    I can Click on start.

But When I put in a copy. it doesn't even spin.
    Originals don't work anymore too.

I need this GCOS disc solution To satisfy me needs.. heheheh

if originals don't work, it sounds like either a bad soldering job or a bad wiikey. the fact that ngc games work (or at least the wiikey config disc is being recognized) means that the soldering is probably ok but the wiikey itself is in some way defective.

    I solved the problem

The thing is I have the wiikey Clone chip
you have to set the region override first in order for the chip to work.

So I took another wii, modded it ..
Set the override then Desoldered the chip and soldered it into
    the 3.0U wii.

Works Like a charm I thought I'd share the Knowledge

I wish there was an easier way because now I have to Update ALL my chips :-(

Thx.. Ok so we confirm that you have the wiikey and it work.

    next questions:

did you turn on the region override "before" you did the 3.0U update?

and assuming yours is the original wiikey and not the clone, correct?

This is false. You do NOT need to run the wiikey setup disc in order for it to work. They should word straight out of the box. I've modded several and never once burned the setup disc.

As far as GCOS, just do a google search. Make sure that you get the wii version. It was developed for the original gamecube (GameCubeOperatingSystem) as an alternate solution to the firmwares being used by the viper chips and the qoob chips etc. It's a fantastic loader/bios that allows all sorts of options for gamecube games such as multiboot, cheat codes, region hacks, emulators and so on.

You can use it to load the Wiikey setup disc if you feel you have to.

Just wondering, is there a way to reflash the firmware of the Wii to a lower firmware version, or are you stuck with the version you currently have? Thanks.

    thank you so much..

    I will now for Wiikey.

    1) Turn on the region override via Wiikey Config 1.2

    2) Then update the firmware to 3.0U

    3) Play as normal without redoing the config.

    woohoo..

I have to try this... anyone can confirm this process. thx

can i just get a few things clear in my mind as i am new to the Wii modding...

    Firstly i have WiiKey fitted..

    1. do i need to update the firmware?
    2. with the 1.2v disk, does running this soley change the console region ...multiregion?

    3. if both of the above are yes....i need to run the region free first before the update is done?

    thanks

There is no reason for you to update your wii firmware at this time.

If it aint broke then don't fix it.
