Hello, everyone. I am new to this site, and to be perfectly honest, I am new to computer building. I am just about to embark on building my new gaming pc and I need a lot of help. I have done some research and I have come up with this list of major parts. Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard Amd Athlon 64 3200+ processor 2 512 pc-3200 ddr ram memory samsung 120 gb 7200 rpm hard drive Nvidia GeForce 6600GT 256 MB video card 350 watt power supply This all come out to about $820. See the thing is I don't know a lot about computers, and all I am looking for is a good gaming pc. If you have any suggestions on other hardware, please feel free to tell me. And help me out with substitutions that will lower the cost. Thanks

Before you buy anything, "YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS COMPATIBLE WITH EVERYTHING, ESPECIALLY THE MOTHERBOARD YOU ARE BUYING!!!!!!" Whenever i first built my computer, i slowly ordered my parts. I first bought the case, with a decent power supply (make sure yours is powerful enought to support your hardware), then the motherboard and processor (these 2 MUST be 100% compatible with each other, then i got the ram and video card and hard-drive, lastly i got all the cd, floppy, ect. My friend bought all his parts at the same time and when he began installing it, his motherboard was not compatible with his processor. Talk about frustration there. That is the heart of the computer. Since your new to computer, i simply combined human anatomy and computer parts to make it simplier for you. Brain= heart harddrive= brain ram= energy motherboard= body videocard= eyes case= skin Thats all i can think of right now, not the best analogy though. Well i hope my post is helpful. Now im off to class.
don't worry 24man everything you picked out is compatible with each other,the only thing is that I think if thats how much your going to spend for just them parts, thats a little high. Yeah, everything looks good and great research by techguy26!!!! Not a bad price too. I am probably the only idiot who builds PCs with Dual Opeterons.... The motherboard for those suckers costs almost as much as your whole PC!!! On top of that, I only use it for Animation and use my 700mhz Duron PC for everything else including DVD Encoding..... The only thing that I can add, is that you should check out some electronics stores for Hard Drives first. I got a 160 Gig Western Digital Drive for $50 from Best Buy and saw a 200 Gig (possibly Seagate or Maxtor) for $80 at Micro Center.
I just helped a friend build an Asus SLI just like that and it's a bad ass motherboard.I would say to go higher than a 350 watt PSU.That's not enough for a video card and a motherboard like that.Unless you don't care for a 200 dollar board.I would atleast get a 400 to 450 watt PSU.Don't toast that board with a cheap PSU.That motherboard has a direct molex plug to power the video cards directly,right on the motherboard.Everything else you have will work fine.the Nvidia 6600gt is a good mid-range card.get a ATA 133 HDD or a SATA HDD(150).
One other question, what is the pin mean for DDR RAM? EXAMPLE. CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) [bold]184-pin[/bold] DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail
ANyway, do you guys think a 256mb video card is really worth it? It is almost 100 bucks extra than the 128mb one. I might in the future buy another card and link it up using SLI. Any thoughts on that? Is it worth it, or should I just upgrade the video card???
I got a good question. With the 64 bit athon chip...do you need 64 bit windows or will plai windows work fine? I was wondering cause I can get 64 bit windows installation cd, but it would be easier to use the reg version.
The regular 32-bit windows is just fine. You won't see any real performance gains from using the 64-bit until all the applications (games, office suites, etc.) are all 64 bit.
