you will need some tool to extract the key from the drive, that much is known for sure. you either have to solder on the drive, or have the ck3 with probe/spear.

yeah, an "official thread" is needed to organize all the information or atleast the first page should be updated.

I think lets keep all the chatter about 1.5 and the liteon in here until it is actually released, and then I'll create a new thread with the first post being a summary of all the information I have.

With that being said, I will also somewhat make an attempt to summarize the whole thread here so far.

THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!!!!

    1. 1.5 firmware for all drives (INCLUDING THE LITEON) is scheduled for release on December 24th. (To see what security fixes are in it, look it up. I'm not going to spoon feed everything. It's posted in this thread) (Actually it's in the very first post. So look at it there).

    2. The Liteon drive is capable of being flashed. There will basically be two methods of flashing your drive. A method where you have to do some soldering, and one where you don't.

    3. If you don't want to solder, you will need to purchase either the 360Xtractor WITH Spear from Maximus, OR the Xecuter Connectivity Kit version 3 WITH Probe.

    4. If you are not going to buy the hardware, you will need to solder the drive. Here is a pic which will help.

    HOW TO FLASH:

The purpose of either purchasing the hardware, or having to solder on the drive is to extract the drive key. The liteon has protection built into it to prevent getting the drive key in a "normal" way. Basically, we can't get it like any other drive.

So you have to use the hardware, or do the soldering method to get the drive key off of the drive.

Once you have it, then it is simple from there.

(This is not 100% fact until the firmware is officially released, but from here on out is how it has been consistently talked about on how to flash the liteon).

The liteon has been said to be detectable in windows. Once you have the key, you can probably just use firmware toolbox to insert the key into the 1.5 liteon firmware, and then be able to flash it via SATA to the drive.

That's it. The hard part is getting the key, but flashing it is supposed to be fairly straightforward like the rest of the 360 drives.

As to the hardware questions xtractor vs ckv3. Either will really work. I prefer the xtractor because I've been able to use it very easily. The apps work great with it, but I have also heard that the ckv3 is easy to use also. Up to you. Just pick one.

    That's all. Hope this helps.

I said, I tend to prefer the 360xtractor with spear. I like using it, and haven't had any issues so far. It's worked great.

Granted, I haven't used the xecuter ck3 with probe, but for now, I have no need to. the xtractor works great.

I figured, but didn't know if ya knew off hand. I was just curious if ya can leave the xtractor hooked up between the drive and the PC and still flash it, guess time will tell. Here's to hopin' for a fresh tutorial to come out, I know there's gonna be a lot of newbies like myself goin' at it for the first time.

I just wanted to quote that first off so everyone on this page will read it.

When reading the key off of the liteon, you are going to need some "spear" device to do it. So if you don't purchase the hardware, you do have to solder the points on the drive. But then to read the key, you will have to make a device, which is essentially the spear.

Here are pics of how it could be done:

Some people have made a spear kind of similar to this:

In all honesty, I found it much easier to just purchase the gear once. It works pretty easy, and I just wanted to do it that way, so no complaints.

    Hope this helped.

    good post very informative.
I have a question that i havent seen elsewhere: Why does the drive need to be powered by the PC? how came it cannot be powered by the 360 as with the previous firmware flash methods as in 1.4 iEx samsung.

The drive doesn't need to be powered by the pc. It can be powered by the 360. But if you are using the xecuter or ck3, then they power the drive so your 360 doesn't have to.

But otherwise you can power it with your 360.

guesswho.. I thought you had to use the ck3/extractor because the last two pins of the power cable are occupied w/ the tx and rx??? I was under the impression that the liteon spits out the key and inquiry bin on the tx then the ck3/extractor delivers that info to your pc via the usb or serial cable? If you powered your liteon via the xbox then how would have a comm-link? via the sata?? i am not criticizing, just asking you to expand a little bit so I understand better. Thanks.

Yeah I'll just put in my two pennies' worth. I hope, like all other noobs here, that some new tutorials come out for us lot by you esteemed elders of the scene :p. Thanks to all forum members who've helped me gain a much better understanding of the whole thing though, like guessswho and mikeismad. And I apologise to anyone I might have pissed off - it was out of pure frustration. I was under the impression that, like the older generation of consoles (PS2, XBox), you could simply solder a chip on and run it. This, in the beginning, at least seemed different, but now, not much so.

Anyway, depending on you guys for a nice detailed tutorial. Hopefully if you could cover it with all techniques (solder, 360Xtractor and CK3) then it would really really be appreciated!

Here is another important read for all those noobs out there like me who are getting their games together in anticipation for the 1.5 lite-on release!

I do agree that the whole flashing is different from every other generation. I come from the Wii Homebrew community which is amazing, but totally different.
