I just bought a laptop with my tax return (giggity) and after spending two straight days removing all the bloatware on it, i think I have it where I want it. It is an HP Pavilion dv7 running Windows 7, yadda yadda yadda. Here's my question. I remember reading about a freeware program that is used to trace stolen laptops. I cannot remember what it is called. I have been through the bookmarks on my desktop over and over and nothing. I'm not even sure I learned about the software from this website, but I thought this would be a good place to start, as I have had nothing but good luck and good times here. What I am looking for is something that installs on both the laptop and desktop and that I can log into and 'look for' the laptop, should it ever get stolen. I would like to be able to activate it myself, as opposed to running all the time, if that is an option. Maybe a remote shutdown feature. If it matters, I live in a small town where the only people that would know how to do anything on a computer wouldn't steal one (I hope), and the majority of arrests are meth related (seriously). So it's not like if my laptop is taken, it would be wiped and reformatted and all that. 99/100 it would end up at a pawn shop. But i will be doing some traveling this summer and would like to be safe and secure. So far I don't have anything on here that would be damaging (passwords, bank accts, ss#, etc.). So if anyone can recommend anything good, preferably free, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
Thanks, but I was kind of hoping for some personal recommendations/feedback. "This one is good, stay away from that one, etc."
Google would be the first stop. If there are technical questions that need attention this board would be your next stop. There are a lot of redundant threads here that may address your problem. That's what the search function is for. Jeff
