A friend has a Memorex DVD burner that quit burning DVD's so she replaced it with a new 16x Memorex burner, making sure the jumpers on the back are set correctly but windows won't load past the "Windows Loading" screen in normal mode. It will only load in safe mode. When checking in Device Manager and double clicking on the burner, the hour glass will sit there for a while then freeze up and Device Manager is no longer responding. She has tried swapping out the signal cable, using all available jumper settings and uninstalling the burner and then rebooting but still won't work. While in Safe Mode, she can read a disc (CD) and the contents by clicking on the device under the My Computer Icon. I find it odd that it loads in Safe Mode but not Normal Mode as that would suggest a software conflict but we are talking about a DVD burner and also the Device Manager freezing up trying to see if the device is installed and working properly. Any ideas?

Tell her to unplug the burner completely and try to boot. If it boots, tell her to get her money back for the burner and buy a "good" burner.

Yeah that's what I'm going to suggest......another board mentioned maybe some bad burning software was the culprit or maybe some crappy anti-copy worm got installed.....we'll try the easy route first with another burner and of a different brand and see what happens.
