Long time forum reader, first time poster. I just purchased a new desktop HP 9402f to handle my movies after using a laptop for years. The desktop has the stock HP lightscribe burner and is much faster than I have ever ripped or burned movies and I was happy with my purchase until I had some problems recognizing the disc in the tray.

I am using Nero 8 and often when I burn multiple discs, I take out the finished copy and when I insert a blank dvd, it's either the program or the drive which just sits there as if the drive is still open. I try different discs and yet it still acts as though I have not even closed the drive. Sometimes it makes it through multiple copies then does it, sometimes on the second copy it does it, and sometimes I can burn all of the copies just fine.

Also, again not knowing if it's the drive, computer, or Nero; when I try to cancel and go back to the file selection screen, Nero freezes and I have to restart the computer to get Nero working again even after trying to end the program from the task manager. I have tried deleting Nero and re-installing and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had this problem with a spindle of (otherwise excellent) Maxell DVD's).
It happened with Nero and Imgburn.

I had previously obtained the approved DVD media list from the drive maker, so it was not a firmware problem with the drive.

To prove it was the disks, I ran Imgburn, selected 'Write Files Folders to disc', inserted a disk and waited to see how long the 'Opening Device' message appeared before 'Ready'.

Sometimes the disks were recognized quite fast, sometimes never, then opening and closing the drive would help it see them.
It only happened with the Maxells - others, like Verbatim, TDK, Taiyo-Yuden and Ritek were fine.

Thanks for the info. I'm using Memorex discs, which a lot of people don't like but I've got copies from 5 years ago that work perfectly. I'll look into that program when I get home from work.

Before it is too late to return this computer, there's pretty much know way it could be anything hardware other than possibly the drive right?

"No" way I mean, it might be something other than the burner itself when it comes to the hardware.

If it consistently shows the problem using different brands of disk using different burning programs, then I would seek recourse from the seller.
It's really not your job to troubleshoot a device that's under warranty.

Yeah I understand that much but it sucks having spent the last week getting all my files, settings, and programs on here and I do not want to have to do that again. I was planning on throwing in an extra internal SATA drive soon and if it's not the discs or program, I would guess it would be the drive and not anything with the actual desktop, or could it be?

Just because the DVD burner is not working dose not mean it's the PC the burner could be what the problem is, first I would try a DVD cleaner it will clean the eye, do not use the pc for nothing else while burning, close all programs if your power supply is taxed to it's limit it will cause problems too, use Verbatim disc DVD-R at 4X speed. When you try to stop a burn yes it will lock up sometimes and you will have to reboot .Test you DVD burner for burning pic's and music for a test, movies are the hardest thing to burn .DVD burners are cheap junk they stick into the PC's DON'T use Memorex for movies !

Thanks I'll try to burn some music and pic dvds but I tried burning some verbatim and they all skipped in my dvd player and I don't have time to burn at 4x lol.

At least burn at 1/2 the speed that the disc are rated if you burn to fast you will get the coasters
