the one in my new computer is a seagate and the one im tryin to add is a western digital. i managed to get the dvdburner workin i set it up on the secondary ide cable. as the master (i believe thats it the one on the end) but everytime i get the computer to read the drive it will not boot windows xp. it says- failure to boot os.even with the jumper settigs right it still wont work the way i wont it to. i htink it is bc the normal HDD is not on an ide cable bc it is a Ultra DMA HDD would i have to but another Ultra DMA HDD (i dont think so)heres my device manager.

is that seagate a sata drive? the data cable is a narrow red one compared to regular ide which is wider. check in bios for boot options especially under hd as can select either sata or ide as boot drive.

yes itids the narrow one i will try the bios and boot options - when i checked last time it was set to boot from the drive it is booting from now. (on my old pc it booted the master of the primary ide cable) this one is listed as just that particular HDD ill check my setup more carefully i am grateful for the help.

I installed a Maxtor once without running the hard drive installation disc and got the same results.

I ran the installation disc and got the results I wanted.

    I'll be following along..good luck
