Typically corsair value select or standard kingston RAM is much cheaper than XMS, however I sent you a link for 2GB when all you said was 1. My mistake, I'll just use standard US newegg links for the products and you can go look wherever you choose (shame newegg don't ship to canada)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814131007 or alternatively http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814142052R if you don't mind refurb stuff.

this is the stuff i'm talking about.

The X1600XT will beat the lower end X800 cards (GTO, GT, Pro) but not necessarily the XL. The 1600 is basically the X800 but with Pixel shader 3 support. If you can stretch the X1800GTO is good, but that might be a tad pricey. The X1600XT is indeed your best bet for the amount of money it is. I wouldn't go socket 940, that's another platform that could see being superceded by AM2, I'm not exactly sure of its future.

AM2 has 940 pins but is a different socket. 940 is reserved for opterons. And cheers.

i have one more question: if the board says ati or nvidia does that mean we can only use that brand video card or does that mean the brand of graphics integrated into them?

It either means the chipset maker or the graphics chip. That doesn't stop you putting either brand GPU in.
