It wouldn't hurt to run a CD laser lens cleaner in the drive. I have one that I run through my drive on occasion just to make sure I don't have problems. It works for CDs and DVDs. You can find one of these at stores like Wal Marts (may have gotten mine there, so long I forgot). Anyway, it wouldn't hurt. You can use it for the car CD and other drives as well, so it's not a waste. A dirty optical head could well be the problem as Craig said; plus, cleaning it is one of the simplest fixes. On my cleaner disk, on the back, is a couple of tiny brushes that remove the dust from the optical head in the drive; no chemicals to mess with things. Give it a try, it's more or less good maintenance and sure can't hurt anything.

Almost forgot. When you run the Nero 6.6, if there is a problem, save the log and send us a copy. As Craig mentioned, it would be nice to compare it to the log from before. Glad you're following the advice and using the RW, it can save making a batch of coasters. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Hello Pete, hello Bear! I have just purchased my first DVD burner and are almost two days that I try to copy a dvd.
I though it was as simple as burn a simple CD-R, but silly me!!!! ehehehehe!

I went through internet looking for everything I need (guides and tutorial as well) but I got suck anyway with question marks all over my head! Then I came across your Forum and you dissolved my doubts one after one. I just want to thank you for sharing your knowledge for newbees like me!

This evening I am going to try (again), but now I got new hope!

Thanks again and I will let you know on monday!

    Cheers!

Good luck and glad that we could be of some help. Let us know what happens. We may be of some further help if you run into something that causes you trouble. Once you start using programs and become familiar with them, the process becomes much easier. DVD video recording is a bit more difficult than recording CDs, but you shouldn't let it intimidate you. As I said before, good luck.

Let's not think about saying "Goodbye" just yet -

Hey guys I'm back, but I had to take a break from the computer for a day because I was really frustrated 2 days ago because as you are reading this it failed again on me, besides a few other problems like I used a rewritable DVD & the burner recognized it, but when it failed I put the Disk in to erase it & the burner would not recognize it. The PC would not respond until I took the disc out. So I stayed away from the PC for a day. Today I'm back thinking if it is the burner itself so first I put a blank DVD rewritable disc & the burner recognized it so my Mom asked me to burn her a Christmas CD for her & I just finished a couple of minutes ago & it was successful so why does it burn music CDs & won't copy DVDs.

    So here is the log:

    SCUBAPETE PLEASE HELP
I have burnied lot od movies using your guide way back in September.I had DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink and Nero 6. with MSI DVD Writer.
Recently I had to reformat my PC and now I have downloaded the recent versions of decrypter and shrink and also Force ASPI which is working fine. I tried ripping some DVD's but am unable to burn them on DVD. I ahve wasted a lot of coasters now I am trying on DVD-RW and still not working.
Somehow I an able to rip the disk and create a backup but when the burning starts it justs stops midway or at the end it says I/O error.
I have tried all the setting and tried burning bot with NERO and Decrypter.

    PLEASE HELP

    jockey747,

You'll have to give me some more info -

What media are you using ? Your I/O errors are normally because of dirty discs OR cheap media -

    Here's a link with 3 guides on 1 page.

DO NOT MIX THEM UP, ONE WITH ANOTHER -

One is for Nero and DVD Shrink,

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/105641

another for DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink and the last is for someone who wishes to re-author a DVD -

Double-check all of your settings and for goodness sakes - get some decent media -

    Pete

    Seasons Greetings, All

    Hi Scuba,
I'm using Imation and I have wasted 3 discs brand new from the pack.
Also if I'm not wrong I was following the guide you posted somewhere in September. I can't find it,The guide was for buring using Decrypter and Shrink. Also when I used to burn earlier I was also prompted to insert a blank disk after ripping was complete but now after ripping I have to insert the disk myself and the start the burning. I have successfully ripped the movie and the .ISO image is in my disk.

I can't see any link in your message.

    Thanks

I have just come to the realization that you've been jerking my chain by multi-posting in forum, quering me in different threads as well as PM'ing me on the same damn question. - You're not more important than everyone else, the rules against multi-posting apply to you as well.

I don't appreciate pple taking advantage of my desire to help others by exploiting me in the manner in which you have. You use and abuse pple. Look in the mirror and you'll see why pple like me leave this forum – it's the selfish, self-centered pple like you who ruin it for the many.

You and your fragrant violation of the rules fragment this forum. As you're looking, congratulate yourself on sinking to new depths, at least in my eyes you have – not that pple like you care -

Yep, double posting following a warning in a PM can get one's behind gnawed on.

Jockey, if you'd read the threads, there is an abundance of info in there. One of the best pieces of advice I give beginners is to look at the guides and follow them. Then ask specific questions about operation. Not general things like I have an ISO file and now how do I use it. That's in the guides. http://www.dvdshrink.info has good interactive guides that give a good virtual tour of Shrink and they have a segment on DVD Decrypter. More in depth guides can be found at http://www.Doom9.org . Eventually I'll get tired of repeating myself.

Good luck and I'd advise against any further double posting or sending PMs to Pete.

    Hi Brobear,
I am sorry for troubling Scubapete, I guess he won't reply to me ever now.
I hope you can help me, I was successfuly buring DVD movies and was using Verbatim Blanks.I was using Decrypter,Nero 6 and Shrink. Now I have reformatted my PC and all the settings have been set according to the previous settings. The only difference is now I am using Imation Blanks. I have wasted 4 DVD-R's and now I have opend a new pack of DVD-RW's but still no luck. The rip is successful everytime but Nero gives an error at about 30% and Decrypter gets stuck burning at about 40%.
Can you tell me if Imation has some issues burning DVD movies.
    Thanks

    Jockey

With Imation you would have been better off with the +R/RW media. If they haven't switched manufacturers recently, Ricoh is the manufacturer of the + R/RW media. The -R is produced by CMC and the -RW by Optodisc. (Interesting, I find Optodisc sells a Pioneer disc under the Optodisc brand, just a side note.) Though CMC is questionable media, I doubt that is the cause of your problem. Run DVDInfoPro or DVD Identifier to read the manufacturer codes on the discs.

Just to be sure though, buy some TDK +RW (I'm assuming you have a drive that is capable of using + and - media). Sony, Imation, Fuji, or Ricoh are some other safe bets in +RW. If for some reason you have to have - media, let us know.

Without some info, it would be hard to diagnose the problem. Are you running Shrink and burning from a temp file or are you ripping to the HD with Decrypter and then loading the file to Shrink. In this case, I'd try the latter. Plus what condition is the disc to be recorded in and how much space do you have left and how much usable RAM? Little things like that and then you run into needing a clean environment, clean out the adware and spyware besides running the anti virus. Just a load of variables. Batch writing software will even mess with a burner.

If you have ripped and compressed with DVD Shrink, try this -

A guide for burning with Nero 6 Burning ROM

A 30-day, free, fully functional Nero 6 download can be had here:
    http://www.nero.com/us/631939541422774.php

    BURNING WITH NERO CLASSIC
    HINT:
First, create a folder for your work on your desktop OR your HD. – Name it something that you'll be able to find. I named mine C:\All My DVD Work\\The Last Samurai sings Swami (off key). Now load your IFO, BUP and VOB files there - make sure they are in a folder named VIDEO_TS written like that (all in Caps) - some programs like DVD Shrink will make the properly named folder for you, others you must make the folder yourself - Nero needs that folder with all it’s contents in order to work properly –

Burning a file made by DVD Shrink.
If you had used DVD Shrink to create a file on your HD you are truly in great shape. When you wish to burn, use the "File Browser" in Nero Classic (don’t use Wizard), trace your path back to “All DVD Work\ \The Last Samurai sings Swami (off key)”, you don’t have to remember where your work is or if you need to do anymore work on it, it is completely finished, ready to go – –

OK then, is everyone comfy ? Good - its now time for - -
“Uncle” ScubaPete’s Step by Step, Let’s burn with Nero 6 Guide -

First - Do not use Nero Wizard -
Please follow along EXACTLY - (might even want to PRINT IT OUT, it'll make following easier, don't ya know ?)

In case you're finding Nero's Burning ROM hard to find (sometimes it really is hiding (Lol). Go to "Start", "All Programs", "Nero", "Nero 6 Ultra Edition" and there you'll find "Nero Burning ROM" :)

When you open Nero Burning ROM, you will be at the “New Compilation” window. Directly under the title “New Compilation” is a choice block to choose either DVD or CD, choose “DVD”. Directly under that click on the “DVD Video Icon.” Then click “New” in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT the main screen.
You now are in the “DVD Video” window. In the left screen, click “VIDEO_TS”. In the “File Browser” screen, 3rd from the left, trace your path to the VIDEO_TS folder, the one you made earlier holding all of your files and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in the right screen. Click on the top file, hold down the “Shift” key and then click the bottom file thereby hi-lighting the entire column of files. Click and (holding the left mouse button down) drag the entire column of files to the open screen, second from the left and release the mouse button.
Now click the icon on the task bar that shows a match on a disc, and then click “OK” and now, clear the room, stand up tall and shout out, “Burn Baby, BURN” ! One more time, let me hear you say it, “Who’s your Daddy Now ???”
Guess what my Friend ? You are done !!!

(Wheeew, now I really need a cigarette)

NOW, STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER ! !
Keep all fingers and toes away from Ms. Computer. Never mess with the lady when she’s working – it would be hazardous to your health, you understand -
Go and have your coffee, when Nero is done, she'll let you know ;-))

    Enjoy your backup,

    Pete

PS - When using Nero to burn your ISO image, use Nero StartSmart - “Click” the DVD tab in upper right - then “click” the 5th tab, under DVD tab "Copy and backup” then choose “Burn Image to Disc”. This should open Nero Express. Use this to burn your ISO Image to your blank DVD.

Hope this has been of some help –

The problem code changed with the new version of Nero but it still appears to be a read or drive failure. These drives I believe were made by Lite On and some people have even flashed them with Lite On firmware to solve media errors.

Much of what Craig said before seems to still apply. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't see anyone else jumping in here. I'd get a cleaner CD and try cleaning the optical head of the drive, and then try the firmware upgrade.

I noticed you went from the Maxell -R to a the Ritek -RW. The media you're using is a bit questionable. Sony, Fuji, or Imation +RW or +R Sony, Fuji, or TDK discs are a good bet. Verbatim is another good disc in +R. I'm not that familiar with the Ritek RWs. I use Philips and Ricoh manufactured +RW discs when possible and Ricoh is my choice for +R media.

It still appears this drive is having problems with DVD media. Yes... a drive can use CDs and still have problems with DVDs. I've found finding firmware for the Recorder: <SONY DVD RW DW-U18A> Version: UYS1 is a bit of trouble. You may need to call sony support. I had trouble googling anything up, you may have better luck. I found one site that listed firmware. (Note the UYS1 version). Here are the links I found.

    How to Flash
    http://dhc014.rpc1.org/howto.htmDVD-R

    Firmware Collection
    http://dhc014.rpc1.org/indexOEM.htm#DW-U18A

Be sure to read How to Flash. If you don't feel comfortable with this; get someone who knows how to do it for you. If you can't get this done, put the PC in the shop and have it checked out. This may not be the fix, but it needs to be checked.

Another thing I noticed was the CD drive is DMA off and the DVD Drive is DMA On. Set the CD drive to DMA on. Sometimes these settings interfere with the queue.

If it were me, I'd stick a different drive in to check the system. That would be the easy way to check everything out if you have access to one. More than likely the first thing a service tech will check is to see if the drive is functioning properly.

First of all, I'd advise you to delete the serial number listed with the log before everyone has a free copy of Nero at your expense.

Before we get lost in the log, which can indicate multiple problems, there is a simple check. Your PC logged a hardware error. You say the drive did fine with a Verbatim +RW and failed with an Imation -RW. Try another Verbatim +RW. It could just be a problem with the Imation media. If that doesn't take care of it, check back and we can delve into the grisly details (hopefully just kidding).

I also noticed you need to upgrade your version of Nero.

Speed difference in media, read the rated speeds. I believe the Imation-Optodisc has a Max speed of 2X.

Since your system said an SCSI error, I checked your hard drive specs. What brand and model PC are you using and what brand and model burner? I'd like to see some specs as well; amount of RAM, CPU type and speed. How much free hard drive space. (With those drives, hopefully not much programming.)

    Maxtor 90651U2

MAXTOR Diamond Max 6.5GB UATA66 Hard Drive
    (90651U2)

    ST36423A

    Seagate 6.4GB UDMA/33 5400RPM IDE HDD

[bold]I've seen movies on DVD ROM larger than those hard drives.[/bold]

From just the specs on the hard drives, I fear this PC may not be a good choice to be burning DVD video.

    Hi Ctljones,

As Brobear indicated, it still looks like a hardware problem. We strongly recommned cleaning the drives optical head.

And yes, the process for burning to CD's is different than DVD's. One could work, while the other fails on a recorder.

    Hi Jockey747,

Your log file shows a "Focus or Tracking Error". This is a hardware error message. Normally caused by one of the following...

    1) Poor Media
    2) Old Firmware
    3) Dust on the Optical head of the Recorder
    4) Power Fluctuations
    5) Defective Recorder - needs to be sent in for service or replaced.
