    Licensed Nero 7, trying to make a backup of purchased 'Zathura'. For the past 3 days, Nero Burning rom has been spitting blank DVD+Rs, back out at me and saying I need to insert a blank. I have tried different media types and the same thing happens. All Blanks are brand new and just taken out of the packaging. RecordNow would not burn to a blank cd until this morning, so I must be making a little progress. Mero Burning Rom did recognise a blank disc and even started burning a little then it quit. I am about at my wits, so I would really appreciate any help. Thanks!

    @honeygo4
    Welcome to aD!
    Your HP writer isn't liking any of the discs your using. It can't recognize them and it why it keeps asking for a blank one and then when it finally tries to burn it fails.
    Normally you will see the media id and media codes in the log. This is missing from yours. Your drives firmware is up to date but the last support on this drive was 12/04. The firmware helps the drive w/ read and write strategies of new media.
    From what I can find on this drive it only supports +r w/ a max burn speed of 8x.
    Which ones have you tried and what is the rated burn speed of them?
    Also free up some memory. No multi tasking and shut down any unnecessary processes when backink up dvd's.

    I appreciate your help, I am new to Nero and I really don't know what I am doing. The best way to learn something is to jump in and get your feet wet, lol.

    Firmware was updated a month or two ago. I have been using 2.4X write speed. I don't multitask during saving or burning. Maybe I should defrag before trying again. Thanks, hun.

    Definitley defrag. You'll probably need to try some other brand of discs like Verbatim, made in Japan Fuji, Sony or Maxell.
    Let us know how it goes!

    Reduce your burn speed to no more than 4X and try differenct discs...try to find some older discs that arent rated over 8X if you can.

    I used verbatim and I slowed the write speed to 2.4x. It started doing its thing and I thought ok maybe it is going to do it this time, burn baby burn. It burned about 2% and then it failed again. Here is the log:

    The problems seems to now lie within your burner...the verbatims are top notch, but as binkie reported your burner hasn't had firmware update since 2004. The problem is that your burner can't read the discs because a new firmware hasn't been introduced to tell it how to burn them. Unless you can find some older discs (8X or slower perhaps) you may be out of luck with that burner for now. Ask a freind if they have some old blank DVD laying around that you could try out.

    Your firmware is current with the manufacturer, the problem is that the firmware support for your burner hasn't been updated since 2004, so there is no new firmware available for your drive....hence your problem.

    Well that is not very nice of HP. They really should get on the ball and get busy making newer firmware. Maybe it won't be long until they get it done. Guess I will have to wait. Thanks for all the help, I really do appreciate it.

    @honeygo4
    I wouldn't count on HP providing firmware updates for this drive. It's been almost 1½ yrs but they may.
    If you're in the US - you can still get 8x at http://supermediastore.com.
    Check out the Taiyo Yuden - great media.
    You may want to also think about replacing the HP - there are some great drives out there for around $50 - look at BenQ's. http://newegg.com

    LOL...No it's not very nice of them, but it's their way of making you keep up with the times I guess. As Binkie said don't hold your breath on development of new firmware for that drive, HP has forgotten about that drive and has moved on to newer ones that support higher read speeds and a wider range of media compatability. I would also recommend the BenQ drive (I hope to get one soon) or an NEC.

    Oh no, I am not going to hold my breath, lol. I am going to start looking into a new DVD burner. I appreciate your advice on the BenQ and will definately be looking at it. Thanks.

    I think you'll be much happier with the new drive - it will open a new world of dvd burning to you :)
    The installation - hey if I can do it anyone can! The hardest part may be getting the case off the pc. While you have it open you may want to do a bit a dusting - cleans off the fans etc.
    It should come with everything you need - the instruction manuals are usually easy to follow and have pics.
    Let us know how it turns out!
