Hi, total newbie looking for some basic explanation.

I ripped a dvd using SmartRipper.
Powerdvd plays the video ok, off the hard disk, but no sound.
SmartRipper originally made 14 files, but when I got no sound I asked for more and still got no sound.
Can anyone see what's wrong with this list of files:

The video file: vts_04_([0xE0]_Video_NTSC_720x480)_1.m2v - 4,227,214 KB - PowerDVD File
    4 audio? files: vts_04_([0x80]_Audio).lst - 1 KB - LST File
    5 vob? files: vts_04_1.vob - 6,820 KB - PowerDVD File

    And these miscellaneous files:
    3 subtitle files: vts_04_([0x21]_Subtitle).lst - 1 KB - LST File
    4 caption files: vts_04_([0x83]_Audio_English_AC3(2Ch)_48kHz___Normal_Caption)_Delay_15ms.ac3 - 161,950 KB - PowerDVD File
    3 rawsub? files: vts_04_([0x21]_Subtitle_EspaƱol_Normal_Caption).rawsub - 2,042 KB - RAWSUB File
    vts_04.d2v - 468 KB - D2V File
    vts_04_0.ifo - 80 KB - IFO File
    vts_04.lst - 1 KB - LST File
    vts_04_([0xE0]_Video).lst - 1 KB - LST File
    vts_04.idx - 611 KB - QuickFinder formation File
    Default.PLS - 1 KB - Shoutcast File
    vts_04_INFO.txt - 11 KB - Text Document

Also, I started with dvdWizardPro, but they have no support. What do you recommend.

Any ideas? Thanx for your help.

When you play other files with powerdvd off the HDD, or in general, do you have sound? Have you tried burning the DVD and playing in a standalone?

    1. NO. I've never used powerdvd to play anything else off HD because I don't have any other ripped files.
    2. And NO, I didn't try to burn a dvd because something seemed wrong.

I did play the original dvd off my computer's player and it played fine.

It sounds from your questions that my files look ok. What if my audio is somehow set up wrong (even though it worked ok on the original). Can you give me some pointers as to how to check out my audio setup?
    Thanks papagru

I am not familiar with "SmartRipper". I would suggest that you check the guides and maybe try DVDshrink. It's a free program that has very favorable reviews.

As for audio playback, make sure you rip an audio track that your player can handle. Usually, the smaller size audio files can be read by the greatest number of players.

Because the original DVD played on you computers DVD drive, it just means that it had "all the sound tracks" available to choose from to decode & play thru your speakers. The sound track you ripped to the HDD may not be readable by the "PowerDVD" version you are using. Not having a "plug-in" for certain sound formats is another consideration

I'm not an expert. There are a lot of posts on this site that you can check and maybe get that one bit of info you need for success.

    Ted.

You know what, I didn't really look over your file list very closely. You're right, there's no audio in a (.m2v) file, it's video only encoded. If they have both audio and video, they are (.mpg). Your audio looks to be in the ac3 file. I don't really use smartripper, as I prefer DVD shrink, but somehow your settings are to extract the video and audio from the dvd. If you're trying to rip the files to burn a backup dvd, this is not the easiest way to do it. let me know what you are trying to do. If you're trying to backup a dvd, get make your life easier and get DVD Shrink. Just a suggestion :)

    Thanks guys,
I can see I have more homework to do.
I think I need to understand the purposes of the various files.
