I have ordered a Liteon 812S along with Ritek 4XDVD+R RW 25 pack from Newegg and it should be here tomorrow. I have also Ordered a OEM copy of Nero 6. Then I downloaded Shrink And Decrypter and have them setting on my desk top ready to go.. While I have been reading a lot of the postings to get the info I need I am still a little(lot) confused on how to buy the right blank DVD's.Should I stick with + or- 4X or 8X? I have leaned the right brand is Ritek ? I felt for the start to buy DVD+RW was the way to go.I have burned a lot of CD's in the last year or so with much success.

    wylds,
So far you are doing the right things i.e Looking at the posting and guides but I would have ordered the 4x instead of the 8x. 8x might be fine for pics, and spreadsheets but these are movies and most people that burn at 8x notice pixels and shipping after a while. Call or e-mail Newegg and see if they will swap it for the 4x.

I think your best sticking with the 4 x speed until you able to work out where 8 x Media will work to your advantage. The 8 x speed media is pretty new on the market and the experienced users are in the testing stage.I'm sure over the next few months we will start to get lots of good feed back on the media.I myself will be takeing the plunge this weekend and making a upgrade after listerning to what others have said. But at present 8 x speed media is a little more difficult to get hold of and a bit more exspensive the DL media is almost impossible.
The duel layer media looks as though it will be a advantage for storing large amounts of data but will be a step back regarding speed.

Thanks Guys for the input. I feel better now that someone has replied. Too late to catch Newegg. They are so quick. I have bought my computer needs from them for quite some time. Can I burn the 8X at 4X. I bought the 25 for 23 dollars. Also I have ordered a OEM copy of Nero 6 for 8 shipped. I have a daughter in law that claims she has been using the 8X and sAys it is great. I wish she was near. Now that I have the programs ready is there any special order that I should install them? IE: Nero first or last.

Not really as long as you install correctly you should have know problem. The only thing you will need to look out for in the future is if your trying out new back up software.Occasionaly you will get one type of software which will cause conflict with another.

I still would like to know if the DVD sets the record speed or can you set it manually. In other words can I use my DV-RW and the DVD+8x for movie backups?

You can set the record seed manually in Nero and Decrypter so that should not be a problem.

You can use what dvd media you want to back up your films. However take in to count what you will be playing your movie on and what type of media it will take. Some stand alone dvd players can be funny with some media.Take mine for instance loves the - format but it is not over keen on the + format. As for your speed you can adjust as RedAnt has mentioned.Nero will normally set itself to maximum when you install. When burning 4 x speed media you would have to knock the speed down. Some 4 x speed media will allow you to burn it faster than it actually is supose to but for best results stick to the speed it says on the disc.

Well I did it but am in a quandry as how to get the job done. I Received my drive yesterday and installed this morning.I made a folder on my dessktop and named it Rip Movie as someone had suggested. I used Shrink and made a backup which took 5 minutes and 44 seconds.
It is now sitting in the folder on my desktop and for the life of me I cant get Decrypter to find it. It was great watching it make the back up. But now a little frustrated am I! Prhaps I should delete it and make a new back up. Any suggestions? I used the sample disk that came with the Liteon and it is a Ritek GO4. She has nothing on it as I have been unable to burn.

Wow it works great. Made a back up copy in 14.05 minutes. Finally got all my settings correct and Immediately Decrypter found and started recording. To me the copy is as good as original. Movie was Cat Ballou with Lee Marvin. I want to take this oppurtunity to thank all for the fantatic help in all these forums and especially the ones here! Not that I will be leaving as I will keep learning with the whole gang! I will help when I can. Laterz..By the way just for kicks I am 76 years young and who was that, that said you can't teach an old dog new tricks!

Back again! Knew I would have more questions did you? Yup, now need to know the best way to remove iso files on hard drive after macking backup. Now I know why they are selling so many monster hard drives. I want to add that the liteon recorded at 4X and not at 8X as both the recorder and media said 8X. Just curious not going to complaign after recording was done at 14.05. Have a couple more questions but they slipped from my computer but will recover and be back.

Locate the iso -> right click -> delete ... and if space is still missing on your hd, run a disc clean up.

Thanks flip! It is a done deal. Now a question for you or anyone else that will have the answer. What is the difference between a DV-R and a DV+r. And why are both popular? And why would someone want to back up on DV-RW?

Hey dude ... try this out.

    Download CloneDVD from here:
    http://www.clonedvd.net/

This is a trial download. If you like it, then buy it.

Make sure you use the right media or it won't play on your PS2.

For your CloneDVD link ... edit your post(don't change anything), and click save. Your link will be right then. Sorry if you already knew that :)

Thanks. I think it came out OK this time. It does that to me once in a while. I think I forget to leave a space or something. I did remove the AnyDVD, which you probably saw. CloneDVD shouldn't need it.

Yeah ... how about the hey dude. lol. My 14 YO son tells me I should try to relate more to his friends!!!
