Hey, I'm new to afterdawn so sorry in advance if this question has been addressed or is in the wrong place. I recenly bought a new 46" Samsung LCD HD tv, and with it I got a blue ray player. I have a number of ripped dvd's (ripped with dvdfab decriptor & shrink), and when I play them in my blue ray player, the picture is a little fuzzy -- and its not as sharp as I would like. So my question is: Is there a way to get my ripped dvds to play in HD or get a picture close to that of playing a blue ray disc, using my blue ray player? (I use Sony dvd-r discs when ripping). Or should I get an hd dvd player? Or am I getting greedy to expect that quality of a picure from my ripped dvds? -- thanks
Hi, at best a dvd is 480i BD is 1080 i/p a huge difference in resolution when a dvd is further transcoded by dvd shrink, the resolution is even less. An upconverting dvd player may be of some help. Jo
No need to get another upconverting DVD player as he already has a BluRay player. All BluRay players upconvert as long as you use an HDMI connection to the HDTV. Even then, there's still no substitute for an actual BluRay disc.
hey gsie2005...I'm in the same boat as you..burned a lot of dvds with shrink over the years and now they look crappy on my new hdtv/blu ray. the upconverter stuff on bluray only works well with original disks-not compressed copies. One thing you may consider (and is probably you're best bet dollar wise) is to re-burn your original dvds (the ones you like most) on Dual layer blanks which are larger and you will not need to compress the files, thus giving you what is the closest possible copy of the original dvd. I did this with Quantom of Solace, which I bought on dvd prior to buying my new system. The copy was almost exact to the original when I compared them. Good Luck.
deathkron, thanks for the reply. I cusomize my dvds in dvdfab so that I just rip the main movie, and 99% of the time i don't need to compress the file at all. It says QUALITY 100% (4300 MB -> 4300 MB)..... or something similar. So do you think that it would still be necessary to use the DL discs? Because when i see the quality is 100%, I don't even use DVD shrink, I just burn it to my single layer dvd-r. Any suggestions appreciated!
no, not at all, if your not compressing than no need for the dual layers...I like to keep everything on the disc, so when I was using single layers, I was getting compressed down to like 75%. if your blu ray does upconvert (which pretty much all of them do), your using hdmi cables, and you're not compressing, I think that's pretty much the best you can get...unless someone knows different. If you hear of anything, please let me know.
Maybe something is wrong with your upconverter in the blu-ray player. As the resolution in the FULL HD Tv does not match the dvd resolution you get interpolation or fuzzy picture. Thats the problem with LCDS, PLASMAS, they have a fault in which they only play best there native resolution. I play my dvds on a FULL HD CRT tv, with no problem and no need for a upconverter. The picture is perfect.
