Depends on what you want to spend and how powerful you want it. You can buy home theater in a box, satellite speakers and a sub. Sound good for normal listening. But to really get the theatre experience, you will need to look at a good name brand amp, with 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 surround. Don't scrimp on the speakers. Make sure that they can handle the output, and have a broad range. Normal hearing is 20hz to 20000hz. Look at the specs before you buy. 5.1 is enough unless you are really into the total experience.

how much would be the price differences between 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1?

Doing a quick search, 100.00 to $$$$$.00. I don't know your locale, so all I can say is look at sites like circuit city , crutchfield, best buy, walmart, or msn shopping, yahoo shopping. Or whatever search engine you prefer. Read reviews by consumers, comercial reviews tend to be biased. Good luck.
