    ******HELP ME PLEASE*****
I'm new to this whole burning hting, and as expected I'm having some problems. First I have a dual layer burner, I've been told I need dual layer disks to burn, but others have said I can burn on a singal layer disk, which is true? Also I have had a few succesful copies ( I guess) the play in teh computer but not in a standalone. I'm using singal layer vernatim disks? Can anyone help me out.

you can burn with dual layer and single layer discs. are you using dvd+r or dvd-r verbatims. if you use dvd+r you may need to booktype the disc when burning. that will help your backup's play in standalone players. also try slowing down your burns and no multitasking.

here is a good site for someone new to the game.

You never said the name of your drive but I have never heard of a burner that only burns to dual layer media, that's a load of crap. Download DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink

    Read their guides

    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd9_to_dvdr_with_dvd_shrink.cfm
Both programs are free and produce good quality backups

thanks for your help I will try these out

I don't know what type of drive it is, it came with my computer. As you can tell I'm really new to this.

Also the disks I have are Verbatim DVD-R (single layer)

I tried all this and it is still not working for me. My standalone does play other burnt disks just not the ones that I am burning. They will play in my pc though. Any other suggestions???
