I want to get up and throw my computer out the bloody window. Please help if you can.

I bought and installed a dual-layer DVD burner yesterday. Then I went online, searched for DVD ripping and burning software, and came up with DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and Nero Express 6. I now have all three installed on my computer. I played around with it a little, and kinda figured out how to configure and use it. The problem is as follows:-

Every time I use DVD Decrypter, I spend about half an hour decrypting it to a folder. I come to 80%.....invariably, I get this error that says "Check condition", and then something along the lines of "Read error". Now I read up online, and someone said that my disc may be faulty. OK, I said. I tried another. Same results......then another, same results, ....and another, same results. I made sure these new discs were brand spankin new, clean, and free of scratches.

I've tried ignoring the errors. That lets me get the files, but when I look at the folder that contains the files to my new movie, I see a couple of files that can't be read. The files are the ones ending in BUP, whatever that means. The other files have icons, so I know they are recognized by my computer. The BUP files have those "unrecognized" icons, you know the "non-icon" icons.

I tried changing the mode in DVD decrypter from "File" to "ISO Read". I was told it would be one big file, butit saved it in WINRAR form. When I opened up the file, ti ook forever to extract, and when the files were extracted, they were exactly the same as before. Obviously my computer is missing something that recognizes thos BUP files.

What is it, and where can I get it? I am SO tired of sitting at my computer.....please help. All the fun has been sucked otu of this DVD burner. Right now, I just want to burn ONE DVD, dangit.

You should of read more ... let me explain !

You haven't named the blank disc you are using , just said they're brand spanking new .... this means nothing (I'm afraid).
Get some Ritek G05 DVD-R & then we know you're at least using decent media that doesn't give errors for being plain & simply .... crappy
(CRAPPY media incl: Memorex , Bulkpaq , most CMC coded discs etc etc)

DVD Decrypter will tell you the code of the blank media you are using , plus you can set Decrypter to rip as ISO .. then just use Decrypter to again burn ISO after DVD Shrink has done its work.
Or you can d/l the free software Folder2Iso :)

Keep on trying , once you've had success it all seems that much sweeter (often hear newbies saying ... oh I cant get this to work ... it's the burners fault about 1% of the time)

Sorry, I should have clarified. When I said that I was using brand new Dvds, I meant the DVD I was copying from. I have several DVDs that I want to back up. I haven't even gotten to the copying part yet. Right now, I'm simply trying to copy the DVD movie to my hard drive so that I can burn another DVD from it.

Okay, the error you are seeing almost always indicates that your DVD drive does not like this disc, even if it is brand new, and just removed from the shrink wrap. When I get these, I first carefully try to clean the disc. If you do not know how, do a search, there are many posts discussing this. I have also found that sometimes one software program will "choke" on a disc which has smudges, fingerprints, dirt, dust, grime, oily smears, etc., and another will not. However, DVDDecrypter is generally the program that is the best at getting past these types of errors.

Does your PC have more than one DVD drive? I have had some of my discs choike on one of my two drives, and then I was able to to get it to rip fine using the other drive. Some drives are more "picky" than others, some are more "forgiving" than others.

It sounds as if your error is occuring during the rip. I am assuming this. Any sort of I/O error or a "check condition" error usually indicates a problem with this disc. You could also take your new disc back to the retailer, and often find they will swap it for an identical new one. It is rare, but sometimes stamping errors occur in the factory which can wreak havoc, even if you were extremely careful when you handles it.

By the way, I have opened up brand new shrinkwrapped discs factory fresh where I could actually SEE finger smudges on the disc, even before I physically touched the disc myself. Arrgggg!

    @minnimee,

I've been using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink (both latest version) for the last 4 months, and I have never seen DVD Decrypter saved a movie as a "WINRAR" format after it "decrypted" the movie into the Hard Drive. Are you sure you installed it (DVD Decrypter) right? Did you set the "settings" on DVD Decrypter to "Ignore Read Errors" on I/O, and check on "Brute Force -> I/O Key Exchange" on CSS?

Here is a simple and basic steps to back up using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink on a DVD5 disc(single layer), assuming you already have the latest from Decrypter & Shrink:

** put blank dvd (please use good media such as Fuji, Maxell and Sony DVD+R "Made In Japan" recommended) in dvd burner
** put original dvd in dvd rom
** open up your c: drive or hard drive, go to NEW, Folder, name it “CoachCarterBackup” or anything you want, then hit [enter] to save it
** open up DVD Decrypter, MODE, ISO, READ R
** choose your SOURCE <-- your dvd rom with Original movie
** choose your Destination <-- browse to your hard drive with your newly created folder earlier; example:CoachCarterBACKUP, then click on OPEN, and SAVE
** now click on DECRYPT, wait until it's completed, and closed DVD Decrypter (this takes about 15 - 20 mins or depending on your computer specs)

** open up DVD Shrink, go to FILE, Open Disc Image, and browse to your ISO you created with DVD Decrypter(CoachCarterBACKUP) in your hard drive, and OPEN it
** Shrink should do a quick Analysis now.... wait until it's completed
** Note: if you want super quality and just the main movie only without the extras and menu, then you can click on "Re-author" mode, click on "main title 1" on drag it to drop it under the "DVD Structure", then click on BACKUP, and OK
** Note: if you want "Full Disc Backup" with better quality, then you should set it on the "quality settings" to your desire
** click on BACKUP, on TARGET DEVICE, select Backup Target to: ISO Image File and Burn with DVD Decrypter, and on "select target image file": browse to your folder earlier you created.
** now hit OK, sit back and relax, DVD Shrink will do the encoding, wait until it's completed (this takes anywhere from 20 - 35 mins depending on your computer specs)
** once Shrink is done, it should automatically back up with DVD Decrypter. That's it.... wait for Decrypter to finish the back up process and you're done(this takes about 7 - 10 mins depending on your computer specs).

Hope this help you a little. Have fun burning!!!
