And here when I went to WalMart they had a crapload of Imation on sale, better watch out I am sure there are going to be a bunch of people who bought them. Actually, picked up 3 more Verb dual layers, 19.88 for three and a new Sony standalone, considering the Sanyo I have hates the dual layers, but the new Sony has no problem.

OK so I just got these Memorex 16x from best buy the other day.

    these are good numbers right?

    Date : 6/5/2005 2:35:36 AM
    Model : 1-0-0-0 SONY DVD RW DRU-720A JY01
    Disc : DVD+R , CMC MAGM01 [CMC Magnetics Corporation]
    Speed : Max
    ECC blocks sum (PI/PIF) : 8/1
    Scanned range : 0 - 2284693
    Sampling count : 608
    Errors : 28
    PI Max : 14
    PI Average : 4.98
    PI Total : 418
    PIF Max : 2
    PIF Average : 0.89
    PIF Total : 77

Or am I just getting lucky with this batch? btw the pack started out fine but after the first 10 in the pack burned fine I have had many "media errors" while using DVDClone2. seems about a 50% coaster rate. I think I may look for some of the reccommended dvdr's I have seen while cruising this site. thanks

in fact check the Imation media replies, a few replies before yours. I initially did a scan that looked excellent of an Imation disc , then separately ran a CRC check and it had a lot of CRC errors. BAD news for the burn, BAD media, get GOOD media.

So it is a marketing ploy to get you comfy with them then start making coasters. Good thing I am going to Best buy in the morning anyway...

as i post as often as i remember, (in my humble opinion) none of us should have to concern ourselves with media problems to the extent we do. The ppl at CMC et al should hang their heads in shame for their inferior products. God help us poor posters when dual layer media is more common, and God forbid, newer, higher capacity types of media.

lol it's obvious i need my first cup of coffee for the day :)

@matt72 - lmao, i haven't even burnt a single disc this weekend ; here's another one where i didn't quite plug the Verb's as the initial problems are cured, but the bad media fairy looks to be banished from that poster's burner soon lol - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197657

i'm baaaaaaaaaaaaackkkk....i know this is YOUR thread creaky, but, that CMC MAG coding sent me a runnin'~!!

    @ tendaf

i dont' care if Memorex has 1x/2x/4x/8x/16x/hell 32x dvd media for all i care, if you get that dreaded CMC MAG coding, you are in for a WORLD of hurt in the future~. please get a refund for those at bestbuy, if you can...and get some GREAT media while you are there~ i personally suggest the Fuji 8x dvd+r (MADE IN JAPAN...YUDEN000T02 coding) they are authentic Taiyo Yudens OR the Verbatim 8x dvd+r (MADE IN TAIWAN will be MCC003 coding which are GREAT btw) or the Verbatim 16x if you want the cream of the crop (MCC004 coding-made in taiwan as well). :) i just noticed on your scan you are using dvd+r so, those 3 are my recommendations to pick up at bestbuy since you are gonna be there anyways~ :)

    good luck to ya~

i will always recommend TY and Verbs when buying locally, bestbuy IS good for something when you need media in a hurry~ i KNOW they carry BOTH those brands~ :) Fuji 8x dvd+r(Made Im Japan-very important you look for these, DO NOT buy the made in taiwans unless you don't care about getting TYs) and Verbatim 8x or 16x DVD+r (both made in taiwan)will be MCC003 and MCC004 accordingly~ great media~

whew...i dunno how many times i've repeated myself today~ :)

You read my mind. I was going to ask about the Verb's and Fuji's. Yeah I will never buy memorex again, and I would never have bought the imitations either.

Thanks for the codes to look up. I was going to get some verb's last night but they all said taiwan so I did not. now I know what to look for. thanks for saving me many coasters.

@Tendaf - Verbatim's from Taiwain are top quality, re-read that last reply of kivory666's, i think it was the Taiwanese Fuji's he said to be careful of..

    yes...what creaky said~ :)

i know sometimes i tend to ramble and repeat myself over and over again, so i apologize for making it unclear.

FUJI= look for MADE IN JAPAN, as MIJ are Taiyo Yudens.

Verbatim= ALL current stock are MADE IN TAIWAN, they are VERY good media~ :)

    hope that clarifies a bit~ :)

for you Plextor fans, a colleague found this -http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=138061 'from the the author of the project PxLinux, the (very modest) Linux port of Pxscan software (by Alexander Noe).'

I was aware of the lawsuit against the creator of Pxscan and Pxlinux by Plextor. They claim he ripped off their software, I think though that it has something more to do now that Plextor is offering professional editions of their Plextools at a price, they do not want to loose money. It always comes down to money :~)

yup, as per usual money is at the root of all the evils.
I'm sure the other person apart from you that had or liked Plex kit, was mort81; my memory!

I'm a tad pissed off as just run a pengo (I know cheap media) thru dvd identifier and came up with prodisc coding. I was hoping to use these as experimental discs but maybe I'll pass and get some sony dvdrw-.

Here's a kprobe scan of a Verbatim 8x -R burnt at 2x on a Lite-on LDW-811S. The data on this disc consists of almost a quarter of a million PDF files of various sizes (244,656 files across 189 folders, occupying 3.95GB of disc). The disc has also been CRC scanned and shows zero errors.
The same exact data was written of the same drive to an Imation disc. This Imation disc generated a helluva lot of CRC errors on a different drive at work but is unreadable on either of my drives so cannot do a kprobe scan of the Imation disk.

UPDATE- Another Imation disc was burnt with the exact same data as above. This time my drives could read the disc. So a KProbe scan was done; the scan looked ok, but then i ran a CRC check. And unsurprisingly, loads of errors - 130 to be exact -

No comment, why waste words when CRC errors will do !

I dont question that yes sometimes a quality brand name does go a long way, or whether its a question of coke or pepsi, but in my experience disc do vary in quality from time to time and one brand could be great then bad and vice versa , getting to know your local retailer who uses the discs will tell you best on market at moment, reason being the ones that have less refunds / takebacks usually win

    @frank

i will agree with you there, but, if it's CMC MAG coding manufacturer that sell under MANY retail brands, you are STILL at a loss~ the quality of CMC MAG is CONSISTENT in all their discs=crap. :)

every manufacturer/brand has a few bad batches now and then, even the coveted TYs have their share of a few bad ones, but, for the most part, it's good to have a TRUSTED brand that you use that has given you the BEST results in your backups in the past~

i for one like to know EXACTLY what i buy before i spend money on it, i don't like taking risks with my media by having to GUESS if the dreaded CMC MAG could BE their supplier~

good luck to those of you that are still deciding which to go with, TY and Verbs will ALWAYS be my recommendation for TRUSTED media~
