    Hi Folks,
I have been searching the web for answer to the following Q's but had no luck, so may be someone can help me ...

    Q1: Is a DVD+R media REALLY superior to DVD-R?
FYI: I just started using Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 8X & 16X. These DVD blanks have great graphs using BenQ QSuite program so definitely nicer media.

Q2: I am using DVD-R, so I won't have problems playing my DVD back-ups in any DVD Player? Or, this is no longer an issue with the new DVD Players?

Q3: I have heard that anytime you burn a DVD (backing up a DVD) at any speed higher than 4X that your Back-ups will have a POOR Quality. Is this TRUE?
Assuming I am using Taiyo Yuden High Quality DVD-R blanks can I burn at higher 8X or higher and NOT LOOSE QULAITY???
What is the Max Speed the Experts recommend!?!?!?

    Thanks!

theres NO quality difference between dvd+r and dvd-r there just different formats, some say there is but iam NOT convinced what works with your setup is whats important and i use dvd-r

most newer dvd players will play dvd+r with no problems .there is one thing you can do if your going to try dvd+r is to booktype them to dvd-rom thats makes them the most compatable with all dvd players out there old and new BUT the Taiyo Yuden dvd+r rum more money

its not true BUT you never want to go above 8x backing up dvds ,most here burn at 4x some burn at 8x with success .good rule of thumb burn your 4x media NO higher than 4x burn your 8x media at 4x and or 8x if it works out for you with your setup ,burn your 16x media no higher than 8x,NEVER BURN YOUR MEDIA AT A HIGHER SPEED THAN THE MEDIA IS RATED. hope this helps out

I suppose this is a good a place as any to to ask my question.

I've been using discs with RITEKG04 dye for a couple of years now as it's compatible with the XBOX, but these discs are very hard to find now.

I've tried other media but they don't seem to be recognised by my XBOX. Does anyone know what media is reliable?

I keep hearing TY is the best dye out there. Is this compatible and what burner should I get to burn these?

    Thanks

you should be able to find the GO4s online at supermedia store, meritline.com even rima.com

other good media would be Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim

and yes the Taiyo Yuden should be compatible

good burners would be Plextor,BenQ,NEC or Liteon (Plextor would be my top choice)and there very fond of Taiyo Yuden media

    [bold]Hi aabbccdd,
THANK YOU[/bold] for your response. You confirmed my suspicions, it seems the 16X DVD-R are best burned at 8X and the 8X & 4X at 4X speed. Noiw, I have [bold]another question[/bold] for you & other folks ... since burning DVD's at 4X speed it gives you a better and more stable graphs and RESULT (not much pixlation and jitterness) would it matter if I just buy Taiyo Yuden 4X speed DVD-Rs versus the 8X or 16X. My only reason for this would be the $5 that I would save on 100 count DVDs.
    Thanks Again!

No it wouldnt matter Taiyo Yuden 4x ,8x or 16x is all the SAME QUALITY no matter what the rated burn speed is so if your going to burn a 4x save the money and get the dvd-r 4x (thats what i use also with great success)

gonwk- The only difference is that Taiyo Yuden is Phasing Out the 4X media - to concentrate on 8X & 16 media - The 4x is excellent media just older stock that they are trying to sell down to make room for the higher speed stuff ! You just get a little more options with higher speed media You can burn at the rated speed (8 or16 X) at lower speed ( 4x or lower) or depending on you burner you can burn at higher than rated speed ( with certain media 4x Taiyo's at 8x for instance! or 8x's at 12X or 16X ect.! 16x so far is the upper limit of dvd media at present so you can't overspeed it ! YET!!! anyway to make the long sstory short ! If you can get a good deal on the Taiyo Yuden 4x by all means use it ! Hope you enjoy your Burner & have a Happy Turkey day! BYe!!!

    @bigtoxy

nicely stated...i would elaborate when it comes to Taiyo Yuden media, but you pretty much summed it ALL up~ :)

personally, i have 6 burners...as per TY media:

    4x dvd-r burn @ 4x
    8x dvd-r/dvd+r burn @8x
16x dvd-r (the 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03s will be out shortly POSSIBLY by X-mas time or next year here in the U.S. :)) burn @8x...keeping the burn @8x on 16x media is just MY preference, while on quality TY media, you COULD opt to go higher, but, from personal experience/testing...i found the best scans to be @8x, that's just what MY own setup likes :)

TY 4 Life~ :) as per my sig. have a good one all~

    docTY~

    Hi Team - aabbccdd, bigtoxy69
Thanks for all your feedback ... since I am trying to learn more, can you explain ... how can the Taiyo 4X, 8X, 16X all be the same QUALITY or MATERIAL ... yet are RATED for different burns speeds ... and I believe when I run the BenQ QSuite test they do show different Graphs and also the program tells me what is the max speed they recommend to burn it at!?!?!?
    [bold]THANK YOU ALL[/bold] as always!

gonwk- I'm sure one of our afterdawn experts can explain it better but If I understand right its something like this ! The speed rating of optical/ recordable media is certified to a ceratin speed ! in other words although you can burn Taiyo Yuden 4 X disc at 8X with certain burners Taiyo Yuden only certifies that it will record data/video or whatever up to it's 4X rating Kind of like having a Car that can go 150MPH !!! but your tires are only rated to speeds of 100MPH ! You still have the option of 150MPH but Your safety margin is better at 100MPH ! That being said you can burn some quaity media at Higher than rated speed = Overspeeding or at lower than rated speed or at the rated speed ! it's your choice Although many afterdawn.com members burn @ 4x as a best compromise between quality of burn & time it takes too burn disc! Hope this explains it somewhat ! This is they way I understand it and if I am not correct apologies to you and everyone ! Peace & happy Burning gonwk!

    BIGTOY thats perfect

gonwk this is what sets Taiyo Yuden media apart from most media

"Authentic Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media, made to the highest standards. Highest quality, suitable for duplication and public distribution. [bold]Features archival quality AZO metal dye[/bold] for today's longest archival playback capabilities.

and this is true for ALL there media being 4x 8x or 16x ,so when backing up dvds your just better off at a slower rate to be on the safe side ,less read errors ,freezing.skipping etc. so remember 4x rated keep at 4x, 8x rated go 4x,6x even 8x if your getting good Graphs doing it and 16x media keep at 8x max. hope this helps

I live in the USA and have heard about Taiyo Yuden media but have never seen it in retail stores.. Do you guys buy it on line? E-Bay? Did a search on Ebay for it and it seems a bit expensive.. I have been thru the cheap media route and it is just not worth it to buy crap.. But is this any better than Verbs or Sony?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, it is just that I have never heard or seen this media out there before.
    Thanks,
    Craig

CRAIGERR- The easy way to find it in stores is to do the following ! wait for Bestbuy to put FUJI DVD-R or DVD+R media on sale ! They do this like every other week or so ! go there and go to the blank media section of the Store ! Find the Fuji's usually 8X speed ! Then look at the spindles /50/100 pks. Look by the barcode area /proof of purchase symbol then look for the words MADE IN Japan! If you see MADE IN Japan - Buy the media Fuji's = taiyo yuden's Also If you can find them SONY DVD media If Made In japan is also Taiyo yudens ! Alternatively you could just order some taiyo yudens from SUPERMEDIASTORE.COM or Meritline.com or rima.com as these online retailers are highly regarded by the afterdawn community ! Hope this helps you out CRAIGERR! good luck happy holidays & burn Kado Burn!

HOLY CRAP!! Thanks BIGTOXY69, I just switched my media from OFFICE MAX and HP %(^*)#$# CRAP to Sony's DVDr+'s and out of the last 10 burns I have had not a single coaster considering I had at least 4 out of 10 with the last batch of the junk media I bought.(I have no idea what I am going to do with 75 OFFICE MAX DVDr+'s.. I guess just chalk it up to experience and chuck them!) I have a thread going in the advanced forum about crap discs.. I was told to try the Sonys instead, so I went to Best Buy and picked up a spindle of Sony's..And like you said they are :

    Manufacturer : YUDEN000 T02
    Code : -
    Disc Type : DVD+R
    Usage : General
    Recording Layer : -
    Recording Speed : -
    Capacity : 4.38 GB
    4700375040 Bytes

The same Manufacturer of the Taiyo Yuden media!!!

I have been using the Taiyo Yuden media all along and I did not even know it!!!

Dang, I feel like I am in the Wizard of Oz! :^)

I just went out and bought 4 50 spindle packs of Verbs tonight at Office Max so I think I will be all set for a while but thanks for your advice about the SONY and Fuji media!! I will keep that in mind when I start running low again.

Happy Holidays to you all and to all a good night!!

    Craig

and online you can get Taiyo Yuden for about 30 to 35 cents each

you wont find the fujifilm dvd-r format that are Made In japan just the dvd+r 8x format so look for them. and the Verbatims are just as good as the Taiyo Yudens

and NEVER buy media off e-bay lol
