My old digital point and shoot bit the dust recently and I have been considering a new camera. I have been playing around with the digital SLRS and am seriously considering the Nikon D50 as my next purchase. I think my photography skill level is above amateur consumer but under serious pro level. Anybody have any comments on the camera (ease of use, quality of pics, battery life, lenses, etc...)? I figured if I am going to drop $800 on a camera, I want to know all the ins and outs of it!! Thanks!!

    Heres a review for you.

Personally I gave Nikon a wide berth due to the after sales experience of other users. Apparently it is where Nikon fall down big time.
If you never need it then you should be okay.
I would look at the Canon EOS 350 D, with a good quality lens I don't think the Nikon will touch it.

I think either camera is good, I'm sure you will be more than happy with the Nikon.
I'm glad the link was of use to you.

I use a several Digital Nikon SLR's as I am a pro photographer, look at the D70 it's a better camera than the D50, I use it most of the time for my point and shoot stuff. The battle between Canon and Nikon will rage between photographers for ever, we all have our personal favorites, but the 350D comes with a naff lens as standard, where the D70 has a really good lens with the kit.

    Hope this helps?

the D50 is a decent camera, but the D70S is much better, i have been completely amazed by my D70S and got much more than i expected. i think the D70s would be acceptable for professionals and will work extreemly well for semi-pros. the only draw back is the included softwere, i would recommend upgrading to better softwere.

The D70s may be better (as you put it which I disagree) but it has higher noise levels at all ISO settings. If I had to choose it would be the D50 and with the money you save invest in a new lens.

Actually, it completely depends... the D70 IS better if you know the few extra features added, but all-in-all they are very similar. I have been MORE than happy with my D50 and I would definately recommend it to anyone with a little lower price range (and it now comes with both a 28-55mm and 55-200m,m although dont quote me on EXACT sizes)

Now, if you were willing to go out a bit more, the Canon 20D will be much more acceptable in many circumstances, up to a semi-professional level.

the D50 is a great camera, i have recommended it to many people, because the price range is unbeatable. as far as the canon goes, the kit lense is unsatisfactory in my opinion. the D50 and D70 come with far better lenses. my nikkor AF-S 18-70mm DX is the sharpest lense ive ever used. I have been a die hard canon user for 12 years, and the D70 changed that. I will never buy another canon. I was very dissapointed in the last rebel i bought, so much that i took it back.
