    computer link http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-news.pl?mdl=PCVRS720G&region_id=1
is that an exclamation mark in front of the 'via ac'97 audio controller? usually intel chipset boards use soundmax or realtek audio drivers.
got this off anther site that a person post the specs of their pc which is the same as yours. "Audio Adapter Realtek ALC880(D) @ Intel 82801FB ICH6 - High Definition Audio Controller [B-1]" so download from this link http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...=3&GetDown=false#High Definition Audio Codecs from this description folder "Windows 2000, Windows XP/2003(32/64 bits) Driver only (Executable file)" the xp sound driver ftp://202.65.194.211/pc/audio/WDM_R178.exe

uninstall the via ac97, do the same for the realtek then restart windows so can find new hardware & load it's driver which should be the realtek.
