    Hi,
I am writing because I am trying to copy some of my personal dvd's that I have purchased to make a backup copy. I open up "DVD X-copy Platinum" and select the simple copy of my DVD. I answered no that it was not a rented or borrowed cd, because I had purchased it. I then agreed to the security statement. Then I entered the DVD movie in my DVD+RW recordable drive. I hit the start button, waited for a while as it copied the DVD to temp file. I then put in a blank DVD to record the movie to. After it recorded the whole movie, it told me the DVD had been created successfully. I then tried to read it on my DVD player, nothing was there. I then took the recorded DVD out and put it in another DVD player. It could not read the disk?

I then tried it again with another one of my purchased DVD's, but the same happened.

    What am I doing wrong?

HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA 4040N, DVD burneer that came with my DELL LAPTOP. I do not know the name brand on the DVD burner because it only says DELL on it, Inspiron8600. The DVD's that I am using are the TDK DVD+R, 4x 4.7GB.

My guess is your using an older version of XCopy. Try a newer version. What version of XCopy are you using?

Here is a link to a checklist for 321 software problems. Much of the problems are due to software interference. Other situations are also covered.

It would be a good idea to make a copy of the bulletin for future reference.

You are using an older version or the software. It would be handy for us to know which. As a licensed user you should be able to get a license to download a RF version from 321. The link below is for patches and fixes for 321 software; especially the Platinum. Having an older version should not make a difference in whether the program works or not. I had the older version until the newer came out and it worked. I did have some problems, but they were covered in the checklist and the problems are with all versions.

After going over the checklist, if you still have problems, we will at least have eliminated several possibilities. When you finish the checklist, let us know if you still need help or if that helped solve the problem.

I forgot to ask. When you check the disc in the PC, are there files and what are they? I mean using windows explorer and checking the disc files, not trying to play it. Just wondering if you got anything from the burn.

    nedepper,

That is of no help. Many of us do use Shrink, as well as other backup software. I too own XCopy products, and I've had great success with it. It really is nice to have other ways to back movies up, and since scottm has already paid for it, he might as well get it to work.

Since it is already paid for, it would be nice to get it going if possible. I have had the software for quite a while and most of that time has been trouble free. The 70% failure rate seems a bit extreme. A lot of people have problems with 321, but then again you see problems with other software as well; including your favorite Shrink. You are right though, Shrink is usually less troublesome than most and uses DVD Decrypter as a burner, an excellent freeware choice. When the 3.2 comes out soon, it will be even better. I am testing the 3.2 Beta and results have been very promising.

[bold]Let's try getting the problem solved before we go swithching software.[/bold]

When I burned the disk and got the message back that the it was successful. When I put the disk back in, there was nothing at all on the disk. DVD x-copy platinum version 3.1.1. I am using windows xp. Yes I did download shrink and decoder and then made a couple of copies. I would just like this program to work I spent $75 to buy. Is there a website that I can download the operation manual of this, to understand what I should and should not do? I would like some literature, if possible.
THanks, will check out checklist, brobear.

    Scott,

It is not uncommon for certain dvd writers NOT to recognize the burned copies. I for one is experiencing the same problem with my toshiba drive (which i have learned is notorious and finicky in certain media brands).

I have used numerous programs and software combos and i do not get any errors while burning them. However when i put it back on my dvd writer, my burned copy shows 0 bytes used and 0 bytes free. In order for you to see if the burned copy was successfully burned, try the copy on SEVERAL computers and standalone players. Though mine did not work on my burner, it worked on my cyberhome cheap dvd player.

If this is the case, then your dvd writer might be 'finicky' about certain media. FYI, i used Ritek G04's and my toshiba writer and standalone player could not read my burned copy.

This link will take you to the nycsoftware site with downloads for the latest ripper version of the program. Version 4.0.3 has a user guide included in the program. It is in PDF format, so you'll need the Adobe Reader (free) to open and view it.

Rename the folder your current 321 program is in inside Programs. The default path is Programs > 321 Studios > Platinum. Just rename Platinum as Platinum1 and the new version will be loaded as Platinum. Then open the downloaded version. Make sure the new one works and just delete the Platinum1 folder. If you don't do it this way, you may loose your activation and have to get it reactivated. Your old 3.1 activation should work as this is an upgrade.
