    I have a 2 fold issue

1st one being my laptop, went through the problem with win 98 not reading a CDRom drive and fixed it so that it would recognise it so that I could atleast now read data but it still refuses to recognise CDAudio discs.

2 a friends machine was updated last night by me with windows XP as reccomended by the installer and it stated that it would be updating all the rules that need updating but instead the perfectly functional CR is no not functioning and like my first machine is refusing to read discs and I suspect when I rectify it the thing will still not recognise CD Audio discs.

Any help as I have never come across this problem before and I have installed 3.11, 95, 98 & 98se, Me, NT4, 2000 & XP as well as 2003 Server and in all those installs I have never encountered any problems up until now and cant rectify the problem.

    Anyone with a soloution?

I may have solved the issue of the win XP machine, I installed all the aspi drivers and it now reads the CD-R and CD-A formats but I have now to install the drivers for the soundcard despite the Microsoft ones that are reported to be functioning properly when they obviously aint...

Still nothing doing on my lappy but IM not that concerned about that but would be nice to have the option to play a CD-A or 2, the lappy is a Toshiba, I hear your groans, yeah its been a rough ride with it, Toshiba are not the most upfront company with their systems, mainly shrouded in secrecy and according to the official Toshib site, then dont have a Satillite 4060XCDT but do a 4060CDT for which the drivers you may think would do the job but dont....

So any Tosh fans could you lend me your wisdom.

If your laptop recognizes the original audio cd and plays then your backup should play as well. Instal ASPI 4.6>reboot>try different brand name media like Verbatim. You might need a firmware update as your drive may not be recognizing the media your burning to. If your laptop can handle Windows XP then I personally recommend you install or upgrade.

I have already installed them, so I then uninstalled, re booted, installed and rebooted and now all 4 diver types are installed, the CDA is recognised but no audio...

So IM hunting around for the drivers, IM not sure if its SIS or SB audio as I cant see the mobo that well from 4 miles away but from memory, I believe it to be a SoundBlaster Generic Type card.

So the XP saga may be coming to a close but for the PCI bus mastering software which I am having a problem finding because....

    1. Mobo only states K7S5A and no manufacturer indication.
    2. Original OEM discs are not available due to a split up between the user and the ex-partner...
    3. if it is and by the sounds of the problems, its most likely a ChainTech board, good advert NOT TO BUY ONE... I told my friend to insist on a Gigabyte board but he didnt and this machine has had no end of problems unlike my K7 I built using a Gigbyte board which has and is still operating 24/7 and has done so for 5 years solid.

as for my lappy, IM not too worried if it wont play CD's as the machine is intended to be used for portable working like writing code and building webs so listening to music is not a priority but like most people, it would be nice if I could play the occasional CD.

I have unlike most people done the full troubleshooting routine, updates etc and nothing comes through from Microsoft, nothing on the Toshiba site, not that Toshiba's are anything special and the company is pretty much in the same league as all the other manufacturers, point you to the web site even though my model is not listed on their site, some reason they refuse to caknowledge that the Satillite 4060XCDT exists, not its na XCDT and not a CDT, the CDT drivers and installers do not work on this model, I dont know why this is but they are a company that produce specific installers for specific laptops and I have emailed them several times to have been ignored, they want to have the serial number to this machine befor offering me any assistance but I dont have them, it was bought from a pawn shop and the lappy was as is, so IM scraping by with a laptop that I have got working with a combination of forum help and my own genius which has begun to run dry...

I reached the ARRRGGGH! phAse a month ago with it and thought that I would just live with it.

My friends XP machine is another matter, she needs her machine, and I can see that I will be recomending that she upgrades in stages to a better board.

I can see IM going to have fun and games getting it to play DVD, but will have to deal with that when it refuses to work.

Any help offered is well appreciated, I do find it annoying with manufacturers that DO NOT and blatantly REFUSE to support older softwares and hardwares that are still present enmass.

Any ideas, give me a shout as I would appreciate anoter insight into resolving these issues.

    Cheers.

Download a program called SiSoft Sandra Pro 2005 and see if you can get detailed info on the mobo and sound. In the meantime I googled up... :)

Right click My Computer>Properties>Hardware tab folder> Device Manager>click + beside audio>properties>advanced. Could be a ECS mobo...

Thanks for the help, never got those in my search, think my ISP (who uses Google for its search engine) has got some filtering going on, flaky results at the best of times but have to live with it.

I have grabbed some installers and drivers, will let you know if the machine has taken a flying lesson or not... :D

Got the Win XP machine sorted, had a bit of a problem with the monitor acting up, but then again it could hvave been the motherboard as its known to have some operational issues.

    Thanks for the links.

So do you get(or hear sound) now? Just curious...

Yeah, the files were C-Media audio that were needed, I took a gamble and downloaded several sets of drivers and installers, it was either an Elite 'ECS' mainboard as shown in one of your links or a ChainTech board or an AMD board, so I grabed a selection and prayed.

Board was an 'ECS' and the type was 'C-Media' drivers and was my first shot and the version I installed was the win9x. Long story but if you look at XP as a beef'd up win 98 SE then if your really stuck, trying w98 drivers may help you out of a sticky patch.

I had to make sure that 4 sets of ASPI drivers were installed to it, only 2 were present of the 4 so I put the forceASPI set on as well and then things worked as soon as the audio drivers were installed.

    All good now.

the next saga will be upgrading the monitor as the one she has is very old and only can go up to 16 Bit hi-color, tried upping it and nearly popped the tube.

This is what I love about old PC's systems, theyre a challange to keep running sometimes, her ex still uses an Atari ST!

    Anyway, thanks for your input.

Your quite welcome m8. Did you find any drivers at all for the monitor at the link I provided? My nephew recently purchased a Sony VIO notebook that didn't come with a driver disk so I took the task to find all the drivers for him, installed a fresh copy of WinXP Pro Corp and everything went smooth sailin'. Glad I could help :)

Not yet, when she gets a monitor I will deal with.

She hasnt got allot of money so a new monitor is out of the question, I have found a refurb outlet which can do a nice 1024x768 with adequate refresh rate for as little as £25.
