That's the wave of the future. Forget disks. The big boys will come around soon and no more disks. I want to convert now and not wait for them to do it for me. I have a "Book" portable drive loaded with movies, seasons of shows and kids movies all in AVI format from the internet. IS there a product out there yet that will play them from The Book? I've thought about setting up a new comp to do the trick but with all the receivers and dvd players coming out with USB, one of them has to work..... What is the best solution? A new reciever with USB support or a DVD player with USB support?
wow, there are a lot of people looking for these.. Here is your solution: http://www.tvix.co.kr/Eng/products/HDM6500A.aspx Will play anything a computer can play. Via USB or Network, or internal hard drive that you supply. Little more info on my page: http://my.afterdawn.com/ugc/
I just bought the Western Digital HD TV Media Player which supposedly does just what you have requested: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=572
I believe the solution you're looking for is My Movies 2. It's a database program that stores all the locations of your files and is wrapped up nicely in the Windows Media Center interface under a Movies strip. When you go into WMC, it has all of your movie covers ready to cycle through. I use it today and I have over 400 movies already. You can add avi files, mkv files, dvds, blu-rays or just about anything else you can think of. TV shows also work, as I've recently set them up. It also works with networked storage like you've stated you have. Just add your home theatre PC, and you'd be good to go. Here's the website for my movies 2
