I finally broke down and bought a DVD burner recently after wanting to for over a year to backup my DVD collection, some of them are beginning to be over played. I have read through all that I can on this board and others trying to figure out what the problem is. I DVD player says that it does play DVD+R media, I am using Sony DVD+R discs, and the player says there is no disc in the player when I put it in. I have tried burning a couple different movies of mine and none of them work, I have also tried using DVD Decrypter, CloneDVD, and DVD Shrink. Now the only thing I can think of because I have burnt all the movies without the menus or anything is there maybe something I am doing wrong in the burning process? I ensure to burn at 8x so it isn't too fast. Any clues? Much appreciated.

    tjonesaz,
First of all, most of the sony disks are made from taiwan...so change to a better like taiyo yuden or verbatim.
Second, when you burn your dvd always change to type dvd-rom if you are using nero engine to burn and try to burn at a slighly lower speed maybe x4. If I am not wrong your dvd player is a older generation player which does not play if you burn at x8 at above.
Try my method which always work for me until now.
Lastly, I need to know your brand dvd burner, sony? lite on?..
If all the above failed you then you need to update your dvd burner
    firmware...use this link: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

Let me know the outcome after you have finished.

Ok I appreciate the advice. Will check on the firmware and such, the DVD burner is just a LG from best buy for like $60, I didnt want to invest a fortune in it (times are tough now a days!). The DVD player is just the cheapy from Best Buy also like $40, an Insignia. I guess I will use the Sony for CPU backup then. I do have some memorex DL media for use in my larger movies like The Dark Knight, I think I may try doing some of those discs and see if they play and see what I come up with that way. Thanks again, and happy new year to you. Will post when I get some more progress with the DL discs

kinda sounds like the disks have not been finalised,or the eye on your dvd player might have some dust on it. open up the tray on the dvd player and blow into the tray, of if you have a len's cleaner run it in the player, also get rid of the memosux disks they are crap!

Ok, so no luck with the 4x burn, but not even thinking I have 2 movies backed up by a friend a couple years ago that have always worked in my DVD players, and the result is they aren't playing in this dvd player, so I guess I need to take this one back! And take back what I can of my unopened media of Sony and Memorex and get something else. So I feel almost back to square one now, ugh.

Ok so problem pretty much solved, I figured I was doing just about everything right. Took the DVD player back that said it would play DVD +/- R and got one that was a bit more expensive and my copies are working. Only other question, which I ran across the post yesterday and can't find it now, is that 2 of the first ones I did don't start out on the first track, I re-authored them using DVDShrink and burnt that way and it starts towards the end, could that be a program issue? Or can it also be directly related to burning speed (the first two I burnt that are doing this I did at 12x not even thinking about it, now I burn at 4x and they are working fine, but after the first two I did I am using CloneDVD so unsure what would cause the out of order track issue). Thanks again for all the help

If using media that is a good match for your burner burning speed should not be an issue. I burn my Taiyo Yuden, 8X TYG02 at 12X in my Pioneer 115D, They play fine in all mine and friends players.
