I have an Asus AA8xe 3rd eye motherboard with 5.1 onboard sound. I have installed the audio driver several times and have deleted the extra registry entries too. How can I get this to work. I have been trying for about 6 months now with no luck. I even call abit and they tell me they can't help me. It tells me that the sound is working properly. If I plug in a usb headset there is sound, but if I use any of the jacks on my Coolermaster Praetorian case using speakers I get no sound. I have tried 3 sets of speakers. What else can I do? Is it a configuration problem in the case or a motherboard problem?

Which sockets are you using? The ones at the back of the board, or at the front of the case. If the latter, they need to be hooked up to the right connector on the motherboard.

Do you mean the speakers? If so they are connected to the back of the computer (the part where the motherboard is mounted into). So in theory the speakers are directly plugged into the motherboard which is why I don't understand why there is sound with a usb device (headset) but not when they are plugged into the jacks! Is there a cable that I am missing or is it that the motherboard jacks are faulty?

Well, what comes up in your sound devices?
Go into your volume control, go properties and then see what device is listed. Is it right?

Oh yeah, that is right for def! It is the Realtek HD audio. Then when I plug the usb device in it changes to that, which is what I would expect. I may try re-installing windows and then use the latest driver. Otherwise it has to be a hardware fault because I don't see how it could be anything else.
