    NO Sound problem

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have just recently reformmated my computer due to various problems. Everything runs smoothly now but I have NO sound. Everytime I open windows media player and try to play something I get: Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

    0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You may encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

Your sound device is in use by another program. Quit other programs that may be using your sound device, and then try to play the file again.
Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the problem, see the Sound Troubleshooter in Windows Help or refer to your sound device's documentation.
You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again.
    Error ID = 0xC00D11BA, Condition ID = 0x00000000

I don't know what happend. When I go into control panel and click sounds and audio devices I can not change any of the settings because the colors are like, dulled so when I try and click on anything nothing happens. It also says no audio device under the volume panel. I don't see what's wrong because I had sound before so I don't know what could have happend. I'm only 15 and I'm not really good with this system talk. Please help, thanks in advanced.

You have removed the drivers which were installed on the system previously... XP has pretty poor sound hardware support .. well it is close on 8 years old and should have been retired 6 years ago... In open source software terms it's a dinosaur..

Do you have a motherboard drivers disk which came with your computer... or is it a custom build job.. Is the sound hardware on the motherboard or a separate card?.. My guess would be ac97.. but we will need manufacturer abd chipset detalis.. slysoft sandra?.. dunno.. only ever use linux and lspci to discover what hardware is in a box these days.
