Okay hello and hi. I have an older 199? Sony AV720 receiver? I cannot hear sound through my speakers unless i crank the volume all the way up. I purchased another one off ebay and I get the same thing. I hooked a freinds boombox to the speakers, cerwin vegas, and they work. BUT BOTH sony recievers deluiver no sound. Could I have lost an amp? And the one sent me be bad also? I mean one day mine owrked in the garage and the next day it did not? Wife bump into it with car? How much is it to have it looked at? Thanks for the help

So let me get this right.
You have to trun the vol all the way up to hear anythign?
Is this the same both Channels (Left and Right)?
YOu sure that the speakers are fine?
YOu say this sony unit was bumped into? What about the other one?
Are they both doing the same thing?

Yeah the speakers work. I have an older Sony boombox as well, a friends loaner. After i got the 2nd defunct? Receiver, i went across the street and borrowed his tower speaker.

I hooked his speaker to my receiver, no sound really.
I hooked the boombox speaker to receiver, ditto
I hooked his tower speaker to boombox, we jammed!
I hooked my cerwin vega to boombox, we jammed again!

So either my wife unhooked my stuff rearranging it in garage, and i cannot get it back right for some reason?

Or; she bumped mine and messed up the amp or pre-amp? Then what about the used one that the guy off ebay says worked fine when he UPS'd it to me. Perfect packaging, i mean it was boxed up nice.

    I am at a loss.

    This is very puzzeling.
If you had just the one Sony unit and you had done the exercise you described, I would have said it was the output stage of the Sony that has gone bust, but the fact that you have two units doing the same thing is very strange indeed.

If we pushon past the "strange" aspect, what we have is two seperate Sony recievers that seem to have a problem in the amplification department. And whats more, they are the same for both left and right channels. ( provided that this sony model uses discreet left and right channel amplification circutry).

How about this, can u use the headphone jack to see if there is any output through the headphone jack socket on both recievers. If there is no volume or anyout put through the headphone jack, then the fault is not just in the final amplification stage.

Let me know how that goes...

I will try that with the headphone jack

All right i am an idiot. In my defense i have never owned anything like this before. So i go and get the adapter to plug my kid's headphones in. No sound still, on either?!!

As i am unplugging, i see another button on the front of the one i am messig with. It says tape2 or something like that. So i figure that is the only button i have not mashed during all of this so i mash it and quickly discover that the volume on the big speakers< right nect to my head, are all the way up and that low and behold that button was looking for an auxillary tape deck? So now deaf but happy that it works, and so does the other receiver that i got off ebay.

Even hooking up the Dish, vcr, and cd changer to the tv and stuff was not that bad even without the book.
Thanks for the help and patience. Without it i would not have noticed that friggin little button

    Hey there,
Well firstly I am pleased that you have it working and that you are happy:)
Secondly, I feel like a fool now as one of the first things I thought of was that you have the tape2 monitor on but I thought that it would be too easy. I assumed that you have already tried that one. My bad for assuming anything.
I was thinking you have somehow lost the power transistor that provides the amplification in the last stage of the reciever. Well that was way over the top was it not?
I guess it is due to the propeller on top of my cap :)
