I have converted several avi's, wmv's, etc. to MPG with Total Video Converter. They work great when played on my laptop. I then copied them to a DVD and attempted to play them on my DVD players. There is no sound. I checked the DVD's on my laptop and there is sound on the discs.

I made several DVD's of mpg's from my desktop and they work just fine on the DVD players. I did not use Total Video Converter but used TMPG for the earlier ones.

Any ideas on why no sound?

To make DVD compliant file you need AC3, LPCM or MP2 (all 48 kHz sampling) sound, that is why TMPG was working.
You can get GSpot (free) and check what sound format you have on your newly made DVD.
I do not know what DVD authoring software you use to make your DVD, but to do music files after your movie you have two choices.
    1. Use same VTS as movie and add your music files to new title, than from menu to navigate to movie or music.
    2. Use multiple VTS, one for movie and other for music, than menu to choose. In this case music can be different format from the sound in the movie.
