    Two possibilities:

    1) You don't have all the necessary codecs.

    2) AVI2DVD is not integrating well with the codecs.

    You may try:

    1) Download and install K-Lite Codec Pack (full version).

    2) Use DivxToDVD to convert the avis into DVD compliant format, then burn with Nero.

If DivxToDVD still won't recognize the avis after you have had the codecs installed (this happens occasionally), then you need to use some program (e.g. Power Video Converter, X Video Converter) to change the codec of the avis into another format (I've found that changing video to XViD, and audio to Mpeg Layer 3 work fine).

    Good luck!

I ran into the same issue and it wasn't codecs. If it was codecs then you wouldn't have any sound when you watch the file from your hard drive. I think AVI2DVD requires the files to be multiplexed. Try divx2dvd.

Not exactly. To my knowledge, viewing the movies is one thing (you do that with decoders), converting and burning them is another (you need coders). That's why we call them codecs (coders-decoders, or compressors-decompressors). Anyway, check out the differences between K-Lite Codec Pack standard and full version and you'll see the differences:
    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm
But I'm not saying that's the only reason for the problem. I do come across the same problem from time to time, and have discovered from experience what I mentioned in the last mail.
In any case, why not give the suggestions a try and see what happens?
    Cheers!

you would need the coder portion of codec if you were converting to AVI. It still uses the decoder to convert from AVI.

    Dear Squizzle,
I may be wrong, but this is how I interpret the situation:
First of all, the video and audio contained in avis are actually often encoded in a variety of different formats. So when we instruct the media players to view or the converting programs to convert the avis, they would try to do it by figuring out a way based on the codecs they find available on the pc. In other words, it's not always a one-to-one match, but might involve several paths and steps. I've played around with GSpot a little, and it appears to be saying the same thing. In any case, the ability of the media players or converting programs in fulfilling their mission is thus in my opinion often limited by:
    1) no. and kinds of codecs we have (basically more codecs, more chances of finding a path that'll work)
    2) ability of the programs in finding and working with the codecs (which might vary across situations)
So whenever someone comes across problems like this, I would always rather not rule out the number and kinds of codecs available in trying to find a solution to the problem.

    Dear pickel182,
Please forgive us for the little complicated things that we went into. At the end of the day, all of us are just trying to figure out how to burn a certain DVD!!!!!!! *_*
But don't give up yet 'cos I've seen worse (e.g. trying to open an avi with the program saying: "this is not avi"!).
In your case, I think the problem is probably related to the audio stream. Recently, more people are preferring to encode the audio in e.g. the ogg format to minimize sync. problems. Unfortunately, many problems (e.g. DVDSanta, DivxToDVD) have problems working with them EVEN with the needed codecs installed. I've come across those situations and have had certain success in solving the problem by changing the codecs into the formats I described in my first reply. May be you could give that a try, and please post again if you still get problems. There are lots of folks out here who know better than myself.
    Good luck!

Which program did you use (Power Video Converter or X video converter)? And did you begin with the avi?

    hi

you need a certain codec to view and a certain codec to uncompress and a certain codec to compress, basically you need a few!

ok i used k lite full pack and had problems on my pc with it! so took every codec out and now i use K-LITE MEGA pack and all is A-O-K !

i use avi2dvd too and film machine which are very simarlar! i get good files out!

ok dont forget 192 is 2.1 and 384 is 5.1 sound! what does your player play? and have you set it to play whichever type?

also try running the AVI through DIVFIX first to check for errors! and with same app strip and rebuild to good file then convert it!
