Nokia 6820 unlocking?

    I'm new to this and accidentally wasted a few entries not knowing I was limited to 5 tries. I imagine I only have 1 or 2 entries left so I'd really like to get it right the first time.

    When I power it up with my new SIM card it says it's locked and gives the place to enter a code. When I take the SIM out and start it up it says insert SIM, but I can still type in a code as if I were dialing a number, which always says "code error". Should I be doing this WITH or WITHOUT a SIM card in?
