well i've done a lot of searching around, and to be honest all this stuff is confusing as hell. i see a lot of curt regulars on here and i'm hoping i don't get flamed.

i converted an avi to mpeg using tmpeng which took a few hours and then i wanted to burn it with nero. This took 9 hours.

should it take 9 hours to burn the dvd?

what is the best program to use to convert avis, and what is the best program to burn dvds.

normally it shouldnt take nine hours to burn a dvd, it depends on your burn speed, the speed of your computer, how many applications you have running, type of media, etc. I use WinAvi to convert the files to DVD, and for the burning, I always burn at 4X speed, Taiyo Yuden discs, nothing else running in the background with CloneDVD, and it usually completes in 35 minutes or less

your burner is probably in PIO mode and we want to get that back into DMA mode. Check my sig for bbmayo's guide, he shows you how to get back to DMA. A 4x burn should take 15 minutes for just the burning portion.
