I have an old Linksys ethernet card that is 10/100 and my onboard LAN card (Marvel Yukon) has something that says 10/1000. What do those numbers mean? Sorry for asking such a dumb question.

    its the speed, Linksys = 10mbs, 100mb
    Onboard 10mbs, 100mbs and 1000mb.

So in thoreoy as long as u had a 1000mb (Gigabyte) switch u could go 10 times faster.
