First of all, let me say i'm a complete noob with consoles (NES was my last one) and have no idea about different modding methods and stuff but have some knowledge of computers and playing with hardware is familiar. Try to understand. So, i found an old Xbox (not 360) console and would like to use it for something (i'm not so into games but of course it would be nice to be able to play too). It has only it's own DVD-drive (Philips) and Duo X2 (AMD) modchip (?), no hard disk or any other stuff but cables to tv, power outlet and controller. I added random ide-cable between the xbox motherboard and the dvd-drive. When i turn it on normally from power button, it gives me blue Xbox-logo with text Xbox and at upper left corner of the screen contains another "X" inside of red V-shaped logo. After a while it gives me green text with many languages (english barely visible saying "Service required. Call customer support") and just stays there blinking green-red-green and on modchip blinks another red led. But when i turn it on from eject-button, the tray opens and it gives me nice green Xbox-animation with sound and then just stays at green X + Xbox-text until the same "service required" -screen appears. So, what should i do? Does it require hard drive? I have some spare PC-hard drives (4gb mostly for starters, but if necessary there are bigger (20gb+ available) and some dvd-drives too. My friend had modded xbox some time ago and he had second dvd-drive and was not using the xbox's own. Is that necessary? Modchip seems to be installed OK, there are pins on the motherboard where it sits and two wires, another going to motherboard right next to pins and another one going to pins near the eject-button (or to the eject-button itself). I would appreciate every hint and anything related to the matter, because my knowledge about this is zero. If someone could provide me step-to-step instructions how to install hard drive (jumpers, preparing (with xhdprepa.exe?) etc.), what i need to burn to CD-RW or DVD-discs for booting the mofo up and to get something out of the machine. - Nixeri
Youll find that the "Service Required" screen will also have a number in the top left! I'd say, due to no HDD you'll get a 5/6. Having a modchip is great, get a slayers disk from HERE insert, add a an old IDE drive from a PC use the disk to format the drive! Xbox Fixed!
