You guys look like you know what you're talking about, so hopefully someone has some advice ...

I've been getting intermittent freezes while playing my xbox. Happened for the first time last night, after playing Baldur's Gate for 2 hours. I turned the machine off, restarted, and got a cycling green/red light and a multilingual "Xbox Needs Service" error. I let it sit overnight, and tried restarting today. Worked fine, and I played the game for 30 minutes ... then the same freeze. Restarted - froze again after 5 minutes.

After talking to XBox service, they seem to think it's a heat issue. I had the xbox in a ventilated entertainment cabinet last night (the same place it's been without problem for 1 1/2 years). Now I took it out and put it on a shelf all by it's lonesome. I noticed it sounds like perhaps the fan is no longer working (the unit seems quieter)...which would explain the sudden overheating.

My question - is this something I might be able to replace myself ? I've built PCs for 10 years, but I have no idea how the Xbox is laid out. I really would rather avoid spending $99 + tax to send it back to microsoft to fix a $3 fan. Any advice on how to do this / links to sites appreciated.

Is your xbox modded? Did you put your hand behind the xbox and feel for air from the fan? The inside of the xbox is like a compact computer. All of the main parts are built right into the motherboard instead of separate graphics cards and what not. It should be incredibly easy to find the fans power connector to switch them out. The only thing you should watch out for is the unprotected power supply on the right side.
