Hi All, I use a vaio laptop. the dvd burner is sony dw-q520A. I use Roxio to burn my dvds. Of late, I have been facing this problem. I cannot read the DVDs I have burned in my laptop. I can read them in other machines !!. My Laptop DVD drive can read all other cds, dvds. Its strage my laptop can read the ones it has created. Could someone please help me on this. The only info I gathered on the drive is it's a Lite-on Rebadge. You've got a compatability issue. When it comes to reading dvd backups,all drives can react differently to them. Lots of formats out.The most universal of all dvd format is Dvd-Rom,which all your original dvds are.This is a pressed in format,not burned. Then when it comes to backups,there's a slew of different formats and media. There's the dash and plus formats.Then there's R,RW,and RDL in both those formats out there. Drives can have compatability issues with them.Drives will show: No disc,Dirty disc,Wrong region,Illegal disc,or Wrong format message errors. Burn engine can also be a factor. Lots of many different things can cause this. Sounds like it used to read them,but no longer. And they are ok on all your other dvd drives,except the drive that burned them.Should be a simple fix. Take note of the backups that are ok and the backups that no longer can be read by the sony drive. Run them through nero infotool or dvdidentifier: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm When the issue 1st rose up,did you change anything with your blank media? By Switching,I mean: 1) Did you switch format or R to RW?. 2) Did you switch brand names? 3) Did you switch to another batch/spindle of the same blank media? 4) Slapping sticker labels on them? What's the brand name,speed rate,and format of the blank media you are using? When issues start to arrise,it's usually when you changed batches of blank media.Usually it's the format,when someone goes from dash to plus or vice-versa. All blank dvd media has an MID code.There are many manufacturers of blank media,so if you go by brand names like Maxell,Philips,Memorex,TDK,HP,Sony,etc-then that means someone else made their media. Take the manufacturer Ritek. They'll make media for Memorex,maxell,Office Depot,and many other brand names. Ricoh,Cmagnetic corp,Prodisc- They can also make media for most of the brand names. If you switched batches of media,that MID code can easility change,making. Run some of your backups through neroinfotool or dvdidentifier and see if the MID codes are different. I've personally seen playback issues when using +4x verbatim. I had 3 spindles of 30. I had a PS2 that wouldn't play some of them. Then I found out 2 of the spindles were MCC-002,which is mitsubishi chemical corp and played great.The 1 spindle was Ricoh adn the ps2 wouldn't recognize it.. All 3 identical spindles,with 2 different MID codes. This is why Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are highly recommended. They are least likely to outsource their media to other manufacturers,but it's getting tougher every year.Now you got individual manufacturers making verbatim,using their MID code. Example: Verbatim +16x. Made by Cmagnetics and Prodisc,using the quality standards and advanced metal azo dye quality according to Mitsubishi specs. Some peeps hate the prodisc verbs and love the cmag verbs. It's getting very complicated. Another option: Which is what I do to all my backups. I booktype the plus format to dvd-rom,making it look like my backups are dvd-rom format. It's also called Bit-setting.They're not actual dvd-rom backups,but I change the beginning of the disc so all dvd drives will think they are playing the original dvd-rom format.Only the plus format can be set to booktype. Not all drives have bitsetting capability. Lite-on and some of their rebadged drives do have bitsetting capability,so keep that in mind if you can't resolve this compatability issue.
Hi Saugmon, Thanks for the reply. The problem is, the DVD drive won't read any backup dvds now, which it probably read a week before!!! When I try to open from "My Computer" it does not open at all. The LED in the drive just keeps blinking. But it can currently read cd/dvd movies, audios without any problem. But the peculiar thing to be noticed is that, if i insert a new blank dvd, it is recognised in the My Computer. I can even write some data into it. I have always read and written in DVD-R format SONY dvds only. So the problem about MID code should not be there. After your reply, I ran Nero Info tool. It said that the ASPI driver was corrupted. After some search in the postings here, I reinstalled them. Now the log from Nero Info tool says that it is clean. Since it could not read any of my back up dvds, it could not get info from it. Also, since the dvds which were readable a week before and only it is not possible, there should be some changes in the drivers or someother files, which I am not able to find. Also, onething I noticed of late, is that when I close Roxio Digital media home, i get a sort of runtime error about some virtual functional call , prompting me to debug. But I am really not sure if this is related to the current problem. To give some information,recently I just got a virus in my machine, and to remove it, I removed some Lower Filters and Upper Filters from the registry. Could this affect it? I finally managed to crack this problem somewhat. The itunes when it was started, kept on, showing a message about the registry being incorrect for dvd burning. So felt something is still wrong in the registry. I just uninstalled Itunes, reinstalled Roxio and reinstalled Itunes again. This solved the issue a bit. I am now able to read and write DVD data files. However the problem still exist with playing / recognising the dvd in the windows explorer for DVD movies. I have also reinstalled Power DVD. So it should have a DVD decoder. What could be the reason for this now? Could it be due to region code ? I have never set anything for this. The properties of the dvd drive shows the same. Nothing is set. Open changes allowed 5. I have never set one till now. Could this be the issue ?? But again, I was able to play these dvd movies earlier.
