I downloaded Windows Vista beta2 and burned to a disc with alcohol 120.
Now I was wondering if I could put in the disc on startup and install it on my backup drive in my laptop. This way If I wanted to I could turn of the main hd and run vista at will. My laptop is "Windows Vista Capable" according to a little sticker (already looked that up). Just a thought, I think it would be cool to run xp media center edition or vista os at will.

I would like to help you with this but first you need to tell me if you are a registered beta tester for Vista like myself. If your not then look elsewhere besides Afterdawn! Oh and by the way, if you have a wirless card built in by Intel, Vista will not detect it or load the drivers! Have fun!

    (1) Yes I am a registered user.
    (2) Although I have a wireless card I use a ethernet cable(cable modem).
Hope this helps you to help me.

First it is easier to install Vista in XP. All you have to to is in the management consol format your backup drive as a NTFS primary partition. Then you can run the install in XP and set it to install on the other partition that you made. When you boot up your system you computer will have you choose weather you want to boot to what ever win OS you have to Vista.

Have fun and let me know how it goes.

So what your telling me to do is to format my backup as ntfs, install xp on the backup, create the partition, then install vista on it.

No you should boot to win XP. Then in the management consol format the backup so it is NTFS. The only thing that you need to install on it is Vista on it. Also you have to make sure that it is of proper size to install vista.

Is this a backup partition or is it a diffreent HDD? If it is the backup partition i would not mess with it. It is much easier to put on a second HDD.

Or maybe this is what you are looking for?

Vista has the NTFS security. Witch means that it is the same as XP. Why would you only be able to install 98 or older on the external HDD?

If you set the external to boot windows xp will not find the disk. If you want I could send you instructions so you could see. I haven't tried installing xp after installing 98 because I didn't think it would work.

Yeah good luck with using an external to boot with. I tried that during Vista setup and was shot down! I really hope your not using your primary system to instal vista. I highly reccomend not even bothering. There is a crap load of stuff that does not work or instal. Plus you can't use drivers that have no digital sig. Yes you can force the loading of them anyway, but they act crazy bad!! I sent like 5 pages of feedback on it and I advise you to be careful! Seems like only minor bugs were fixed from beta 1.
