    hello ppl
i backed up a few avi movie files into a dvd+r and when i tried to retrieve it in my new sys the sys reads it as blank dvd....but there is data written in it as the layer shows so.....is there any possible way to retiurve my data....
on the other hand i was able to retrieve data from dvd-r......btw i am using LITE-ON SHM-165P6S to read these data......i was never able to read the dvd+r even in the drive in which i burned it(Pioneer)

here is your drive on Videohelp.com. It shows that your drive is capable of reading and writing on DVD+R media. now you must ask yourself what program did you use to burn those AVI files to disk. Maybe it didn't finalize the disk and so you can't see what's on there until you finalize your disk. Using Nero sometimes sets the burning process to MULTISESSION. If you didn't uncheck that the disk is not finalized and you can finalize it and then view the movie! That's just one thing...... untill you say what program you used, what brand of media did you use, I can't tell what you did and I'm just guessing....... more info please.

There is no reason to worry about booktype when he's talking about what appears to be AVI's saved as data, nor should finalizing matter.

I beg to differ, MysticE. Just because Jibril5 was able to retrieve data from a DVD-R..... doesn't mean that the DVD+R was done the same way as the DVD-R, which can be read!~ Sooooooo I stand by my first statement about multisessions or Finalization as a possible cause of the problem and I

    @ IHoe

You seem to be splitting hairs here. Are you saying to be readable in a computer a DATA disc has to be finalized?

I'm not splitting hairs..... we don't know what this person did so we can only guess......and I don't know whether the one disk is a data disk or DVD compatible files (Vob)..... all I'm saying is we need more info to make a more informed response!

    @ IHoe

Sorry, I was in one of my moods.

    @ jibril5

Did you actually check for the true maker of the media (DVDIdentifier works well for this)? I have Imation -R's that are made by Fuji and Imation +R's that are made by MBI (not exactly the best maker).

As a side note I have Fuji -R's that are actually made by ProDisc, go figure.

If this is an isolated incident it's not worth worrying about. The disc not being read by the burner that created it is also a bad sign. I routinely tick 'verify data on disc after burning' for any sensitive files I'm saving.

    >> Mitsubishi Chemical Corp

Well it ain't crappy media. MCC's about as good as it gets.

    >> ...it still shows as blank dvd....is it possible if i add a small file and finalise it

I doubt it and finalization only applies to DVD Video that you want to play on a standalone player. I guess you could could try to burn something to it and untick any multisession option.
