my sons laptop got the "hacked by godzilla" virus so i googled it to see how to get rid of it. thats when the problems started, i switched the laptop on and after startup (the windows scrolling bar) nothing there, just a photo he has as a screen saver. so i started it in safe mode this time all there was was the windows version on the top of the screen and safe mode in both bottom corners, nothing else, no start button,no internet explorer or anything. the laptop was working ok the day before even with the godzilla hack on it.

    Hi noideame

Can you open task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and click on File, then New Task (Run...). Type in explorer.exe, and then OK. Does your desktop come back?

After that, before we begin the cleanup process, it is important to do a little analysis first. We will analyze your computer with a tool called HijackThis.

Please download the HijackThis zip file. Save it onto a convenient place in your computer, and then unzip the file.

    Rename HijackThis(.exe) to scanner(.exe).

Next, run scanner(.exe). A window will pop up.

    • Click on the button which says Main Menu, then Do a system scan and save a logfile.
    • Please wait for the scan to be completed.
    • After the scan has completed, a text window will pop up. Please post the contents of this window here.

This will also be located at hijackthis(.txt) in the same folder that HijackThis was originally saved.

NOTE:: Do not fix anything using HijackThis, as this may also damage legitimate components of your computer.

    Best Regards :D

Did you set the Antivir cd to repair/rename all infections?

Please then reboot your computer into Safe Mode With Command Prompt by doing the following:
    • Restart your computer
    • After pressing the power button, repeatedly tap the F8 key.
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the option to run Windows in Safe Mode With Command Prompt, then press Enter.
    • Choose the administrator's account.

If the Command Prompt loads, type in explorer.exe. Does your desktop come back?

    Best Regards :D

    Hey noideame

I will go ahead and ask you to format and reinstall your system. This is the last resort, as the malware has absolutely ravaged your system beyond repair. Or else, you can get it to a local computer shop, as to fix it online would be too much effort as well as having no guarantees.

    Hope it works :D

    Hey noideame

Yes, follow ddp's advice and backup all your data first.

We can try to fix your problem. Please boot into Safe Mode with Networking and see if you have your desktop there.

If so, please download the HijackThis zip file.
