Hope this post is in the right section. I am new to this. Having problems converting AVI files (downloaded from KZ) into mpg files. I burned a downloaded mpg file to a DVD-R and it plays well on my DVD player. The program (Sony – Click to DVD) that came with my new PC won’t let me burn the converted file with message: File format not supported or corrupted – Filename (DivX) DVD Rip.mpg. Got this message for the 3 files I tried I followed advice found on other posts and articles: uncompress audio with VirtualDub and convert AVI to Mpeg-1 using TMPGEnc. (settings for DVD low resolution for NTSC). What is going wrong or what am I missing here. Any advice greatly appreciated
I am venturing into something that I may dig a deeper hole… but here it goes. DVD authoring (creating) software relies on the user to have the movie file all-ready to be burned. Thus your final video format should be in DVD-mpeg. The file you downloaded from KZ has entirely in different encoding so your DVD authoring software cannot comprehend the meaning of the file (we see it as an image or a movie but to a computer it’s nothing more than 0’s and 1’s). And since your movie file is in DivX (AVI) format the Sony software has no way of crossing over two encoding processes—DivX to DVD-mpeg to DVD-VOB. So, if you really, and I mean really, want to get that file to play on your DVD player here is my suggestion. I assure you that there are many other ways of doing the following process, but I never cared to find out. 1. Convert DivX (AVI) to un-compressed AVI file. Adobe Premiere as one example, it’s going to be a huge file. 2. Encode the new raw AVI file to MPEG2. TMPG or ShowBiz are some of the programs that can do this easily. 3. Authorize using your Sony DVD creation software. If you bypass the first step you’ll soon find out that the last 10 to 20 minutes of your movie will be in a still picture with sounds that will keep on going. I suppose this has to do with the way DivX AVI movies are encoded.
I skipped the first step. That could be the problem. More questions tough. Some dowmloaded files have an AVI extension without showing DivX. Are they "true" AVI files or do they still need to be compressed. Meanwhile I burned 2 DVD's with NeroVision Express. I understand that this program converts the files before burning them. Is that right? New problem with these new burns are that they play for about 45 minutes and stop with the message "disk dirty". Any idea? I use TDK DVD-R. My CD's from TDK burn with no problems.
