There are certain avi files that when I try to play, a message pops up in wmp saying that some error occured. The message had this:

    AppName: mplayer2.exe AppVer: 6.4.9.1125 ModName: ntdll.dll
    ModVer: 5.1.2600.1217 Offset: 00008e20

So I have to try to open the file several times until it actually is able to play. Has anyone else had this problem? Any input would be much appreciated.

What codecs are required for playback? :)

Windows Media player has both a current version and a older 6.4 version for compatiblity.

Example: The current Windows Media player series 9 has both versions.

    wmplayer.exe File version: 9.0.0.2980
    mplayer2.exe File version: 6.4.9.1125

WMP 9 can play some files and use some codecs that WMP 6.4 cannot.

From the error you are receiving it would seem that you are trying to play the file in the 6.4 version. Is that the case? What happens when you play the file in the 9 version?
