Am i right in thinking that a Null modem cable is different to a rs232 cable ? but often called an rs232 cable?

    i bought
    this
one from ebay and it doesnt seem to do the job on my starview box....i bought the usb adapter from the same crowd. I used the cable/adapter with my laptop and the cable only with my desktop. neither worked. I changed the com ports to number 1 and also tried it at number 2 and I kept getting flash failed.

All i can think of is that the cable is wrong. any ideas?

yeah a null modem cable is different you need a null modem cable db9f to db9f and make sure you installed the usb adaptor on to your computer with the little disc that comes with it

had a look there yeah that cable seems ok so if you have the right com port setting then it could be the file or loader which starview box have you got and what loader and bin file you using

I have a genuine starview 1...i just counted the vents and its genuine...have gtrom v4.00 and CryptStar-v1.4-Core400 genuine only.

i changed the com ports to 1 and tried...no joy...so tried it set to 2 and still no joy. I did the same on the desktop and still the exact same thing

i changed the baud rate to 11520 on the com ports too
on the gtrom the STB model is set to GCR 3510
and the file type is "app file only"

all i can think of is the cable is dodgy

right ive done it myself with no box connected two of the com ports will open for me with the adaptor but im sure only one will work so try the four com ports in the loader two might come up cant open which is fine so try the ones thats working it will come up download but the same happened to me with no box on the end of the null modem it came up flash failed so its not picking up your box or maybe your cable is wrong but it looks good to me ... so make sure your box is connected and on standby with all scarts and tv cables dissconnected from your box and if you`ve alredy done that just as you leave your box off press download and quickly turn your box on and put it on stand by its all i can think of for the moment

    Ireland

Got the bro to pick me up one locally for 15 yo yos.....i'm a bit of an obsessive when it comes to doing things..i always want it done yesterday ...so wasnt prepared to wait for another from fleabay

hopefully I should get it done tonight so

i could pay someone to flash it for me but i'd prefer to do it myself and learn

15-20 euro is too expensive to pay someone to flash your box for ya

im the same i have no patience i have to get it done myself yeah why pay when you can do it your self and i always direct people to this site to sort thier boxes out but ive done a few friens and family no prob but when people start asking you to head down to their house with your lap top there is no harm in charging a small fee for your trouble of travelling 10 to 15 max especially for people you dont know cos word gets around quick and your mobile goes mental so anyone with a computer can get all the help they need right here for free

    Hi
When you have installed your USB driver goto, Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and see which Com Port your USB driver has allocated, and try this number in the loader S/W mine is sometimes 3 or 4 but it depends which ports have all ready been taken.

it was originally allocated com port 7 but the gtrom only goes to 4...i've renamed it 1,2,3 and 4

should have a different cable tonight so i'll know later if it was the cable...i have a gut feeling it is

The problem is the cable as its the wrong one , lines wired straight through is the rs232 as a NULL MODEM CABLE has CROSS-OVER config and thats what is needed

    thanks for your help guys

theres a lot of threads with a lot of pages goin on.....would a sticky showing the procedure for flashing each box be possible...also it could be stated in it that the rs232 is different from the null modem ....save someone making the same mistake as me
