Check the technical faq, you can find it in the autoplay menu.

Have you installed the first betapatch?

I also found that disabling the AVG-free antivirus scanner has improved the stability of the game on my computer.

There are also some stablity problems with certain codecs for the game. Some systems just random crash here and there. The problem I get with mine is my guy will constantly start running in slow motion everyonce in awile and I have to save where I am exit the game and re open it. GOOD TIMES :)

The latest patches can be found at: http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm

Yes AVG is an antivirus scanner, my point being it might be worth a shot to disable the antivirus scanner while playing no matter which one you use. Just to see if there is a difference. I have to say though that I played last night with the scanner on and did not experience any unstability.
