Hello.. I recently bought a premodded gamecube with the Viper GC Extreme chip... I flashed it to the Cobra 1.6 bios and all seemed well. I've run into a problem where the first time I use the GC that day it loads the backup disc just fine, no issues at all. But, if I turn it off and back on, one of two things will happen:

    1. The disc drive will spin up and attempt to read the disc, while I sit at the Cobra bios menu. After a little bit, the disc drive will spin down and stop. If I select the option to view the directory structure of the disc, it will report "unknown file structure".

    2. After I press power, the Cobra bios will come up to it's "Please Wait" screen before you get the menu, and it will just sit there at "Please Wait". The drive never spins up, and you have to power it off/on again.

Each time I turn it off and back on, I get one of the above two results, seemingly at random. Eventually it will work, I think it works after I leave the GC alone for a minute or two and then come back to it, but am not 100% sure of this. Any suggestions? When it does work, it works great, I have never gotten a read error while playing etc. Thanks much!

Try reflashing it and see if that helps at all.

Also, how many back-ups have you tried using? Try at least three different games and see if the results are any different.

I tried reflashing as you suggested, found a few odd things. I first reflashed the Cobra 1.6 bios, and the problem persisted. One thing I noticed though, the problem actually triggers when I CHANGE cds.. For example, I had a backup DVD in there, it read fine, turned the gamecube off and on 3 times, read fine each time. Put in a different backup DVD, that I also know the gamecube has no problems reading, and the drive would start to spin up, then spin down again, unable to read the disc. Turned it on and off a couple times, same result, no read. Put the first DVD back in and it loaded right up again. So it at least appears on the surface that the gamecube/modchip is confused by the different DVD, not sure what info it could be saving though. I even tried unplugging it between switches to no avail. Perhaps this is actually nothing and I'm misinterpreting what I'm seeing, but it is odd. :)

After that, I flashed the cube with the GCOS 1.5 bios instead. This bios behaved much differently. The gamecube starts to spin up for perhaps half a second, then immediately stops, and I get the GCOS menu, which indicates current disc status as "no disc". However, if I hit "boot disc", it does that quick spin up/stop again, sits for about 3 seconds, then seems to completely reinitialize the DVD drive and loads the game without issue. With GCOS, every time the BIOS thinks the drive is empty initially, even after it just booted that disc successfully, but it is able to boot each disc 100% of the time. While this is an improved situation, it still seems like a problem, as in GCOS I cannot pull directory structures on a DVD, and regardless I would prefer the Cobra bios. :) Any suggestions/thoughts? Thanks again.

Have you ajusted the pot at all yet? That might make a difference.
